Childs 1st British Passport application from overseas (Thailand) - Confirming documents need

I'm in the process of applying for my daughters 1st British passport from overseas and i wanted to double check the documents needed as there are quite a few different tables to cross check in the requirements doc: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/62d961378fa8f50bfcd3f592/OS_Guidance_G2_07.22.pdf

Some Info:

  • Child: Born 2022
  • Father (me): British by birth, born before 1st Jan 1983
  • Mother: Thai, born 1986
  • Applying from Thailand

Documents needed (all originals unless stated otherwise):

  1. 2 x recent passport photos of Child
  2. Child's Birth Certificate
  3. Child's Birth Certificate translation
  4. Copy of Child's Thai Passport
  5. Father's passport
  6. Father's Birth Certificate
  7. Mothers Thai ID Card
  8. Mother's Thai ID Card translation
  9. Mother's Birth Certificate
  10. Mother's Birth Certificate translation
  11. Document showing a link to the parent applying and show that the child and parent are resident where they are applying from. Accepted are:
    1. Parent's ID Cards
    2. Childs school records
    3. Medical/hospital records (birth records)
    4. Mother's antenatal records

Not needed:

  • Parents marriage certificate. In table C it states
(this does not apply for those born on or after 1 July 2006)

  • Grandparents’ documents. In table E, for First Time Applicants, it states:

If your parents were born on or after 1 January 1983:
evidence of your grandparents’ claim to British nationality by providing their birth certificates and,
in the case of grandfathers, the marriage certificate to your grandmother.

However, I was born before 1983 so not applicable.

Do these look like all the correct documents needed?

Only bit I'm having trouble with is 11, as I cant find anything that has both child's and mothers/my name on, and our current address (we moved after she was born).

Yes, I am born before 1983 too and didn't provide my parents birth certificates. My wife is born after 1983.

For 11. you can provide copies (and translations) of mothers page and childs page of the Blue House Book. Address is also on I.D. cards as well but I included blue book to be sure. We also included Marriage Certificate and translation (both sides) and mother change of name certificates (she had two, one from when her mother divorced and one from marriage to me).

Provide colour copies of documents, don't need to send off originals but VFS check all the originals against the copies.

No problems with our son being issued his British passport!

Great thanks.

Did you supply Mother's Birth Certificate?  I think parents Birth Certificate may only be needed for the British parent/s, but not sure.

Did you provide anything that had your name and your address, or anything that proves your residence status in Thailand?

I didn't provide my wife's Lao birth certificate as she doesn't have one.  They were happy with her passport and a (bad) copy of her entry in her family's Lao housebook.

Yes, we provided Mothers Birth Certificate and her two name change certificates, didn't see any reason not to provide it.

I'm not resident in Thailand so didn't provide anything with my name and address on.

With your point 11, where it says "a link to the parent applying", in our case, even though we are married, we don't live together, but Mother and Child do, so the parent applying was the Mother because they live together in Thailand. Only one parent applies.  If you aren't married, but live together, I guess the Mother still needs to apply (and know someone who can countersignature)? If you are married and live at the same address as the child then as the father you can apply for them, but would need to provide something with same address as your child.
