What actually comes from Europe the USA can't live without? Wine? California has been winning all the international awards for years now. We make cheese as good as any if you pay for it.  I can't think of anything they have that I need.

Come on, not that "unfair trading" lame argument. It's not unfair trading, it's the lack of competitiveness of the U.S.

European countries are not China. They pay regular salaries, social taxes, government taxes, etc... there is no social or economic dumping. And also, unlike China, it's not the State who decides what consumers must buy. They don't buy that much American products because they have better options on the market.

Actually they do buy at lot of American brands, ex. Apple, HP, but they are produced in China! 🙂

And they charge very high tariffs for a lot of American goods.

Do you naively think that UK will be spared from U.S. tariffs?

Yes, I do.

How about the retaliatory/negotiating power of UK, compared to the much larger EU? 😆

No need for any of that malarkey. We're a good customer unlike that protectionist racket.

Neither the UK nor the EU supply puberty blockers to the US.......so it is yet another US industry going down the plug hole courtesy of Mr Trump.

Funny, it's not what the UK government claims! 🙂

Total UK exports to United States amounted to £182.6 billion in the four quarters to the end of Q3 2024 (a decrease
of 0.5% or £889 million in current prices, compared to the four quarters to the end of Q3 2023);
• Total UK imports from United States amounted to £111.5 billion in the four quarters to the end of Q3 2024 (a decrease
of 5.1% or £5.9 billion in current prices, compared to the four quarters to the end of Q3 2023).

Depends how it's calculated.

The US includes Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man in the figures which seems more accurate to me than the ONS figures since they are indeed island territories.

Of course, if Starmer sends Lammy we might get shafted anyway after his inane comments about Trump. That's the joy of having a buffoon in such a senior role.

What is not true?

That the U.S is not currently imposing special tariffs on some specific goods from the E.U.

What are they going to do?  Huff and puff and hold their breath until they turn blue?  That'll show Trump!

I see. So the UK trade balance with the U.S. has been showing a deficit since the year 2016. Coincidence?

The Eu have exploited the USA and the UK for years. Just check out the balance of trade between the Eu and these countries and you will see that it’s all one sided in favour of the Eu.

You will need to import wines for the next 2-3 years. The smoke taint from the California fires will affect grapes and wine for about that long, assuming you have no more of them.

Smoke taint is what makes wines undrinkable.

Personally, I have found US wines to be quite insipid, but I am used to Barossa and Rutherglen hearty shiraz.
