Thanks for this, I was just about to book a night down in Pataya. Now onto the Ante/Post Meridiem issue, safer to label and describe it as 0001 after midnight on Tuesday to 2359 on Wednesday (give or take a minute or two.

If you read the article it tells you exactly when the bars are closed what is all the confusion TIT

As is the case on all Buddhist religious holidays in Thailand. 

Across the border here in Cambodia, the same religious ceremony is known as Meak Bochea Day with Buddhists visiting temples, however it is NOT a public holiday and the sale of alcohol is allowed. The bars and restaurants will be open as usual and, no doubt, many Khmers will enjoy a drink with a meal after visiting a temple. IMO Cambodia has the right idea.

We are still allowed to drink on that day, just not in bars.

If you are planning a visit to a Government building on Wednesday, it will likely be closed. My local Immigration office in Pattaya for one, as an example.

Its about the hypocrisy. Only tourist have to follow this rule. Thais most certainly don't. Every mum and dad shop across Thailand will be selling beer, whiskey and Lao Khao

There is an M&P shop just up the road from my place. I believe these Buddhist days are their busiest days.

We in the west used to have the same rules about liquor sales on Christian days

The only country I know which did that was Wales.

No bar-bill stiletto attacks and ladyboy brawling or falling into man-holes for 24 hours.............its gonna be a tense long day.

Far more important than Alcohol in bars and shops being prevented from selling - I have just been told that hospitals will only be accepting emergencies - no regular visits - is that true

I'm sure people realise this, they don't need the teacher's pet to tell them. However, someone here for a short holiday loses one night out on the town, unless they're tea-total, so they're entitled to have a little drip about it in my opinion. I always make sure I'm well stocked up with booze, but I'm a long-stayer and am well prepared now for these events.

Correct! When I was down that way many years ago, we used to nip across the border to Chepstow on a Sunday, as did half the local population I reckon.

A little difficult to do that from Barmouth, but we managed to find a place a little way north, Can't remember the name it was back in 1965, more years than I care to think about.

None of this is clear, but typically from past experience regartding late night venues (clubs):

Pattaya - some venues open Tuesday night, everything closed Wednesday night.

Bangkok - everything closed Tuesday night, all open Wednesday night at midnight.

Good friday was  a dry day as I remember in England and other religious days Christmas Day, Easter Monday and Sunday had restricted hours as did every Sunday

Certain counties in Wales used to keep the pubs closed on Sundays, Working mens / miners clubs could open

They had local referendums on this every 5 years I think

On more than one occasion I've heard tourists voice their frustration when they realized their vacation has been cut short a day. It makes absolutely no sense. Should at least allow tourist-oriented venues to serve.
