An ice cream vendor in Ang Thong, Thailand was left devastated when a scammer altered a 100 baht note to resemble 1,000 baht, absconding with the change after a quick purchase.

On 19th February, social media buzzed with warnings for street vendors to stay vigilant after Mr. Witoon, a 41-year-old ice cream vendor, was duped in an elaborate scam. Mr. Witoon, who uses a motorcycle with a sidecar to sell coconut ice cream, was approached by a conman posing as a customer in Pho Thong district.

The incident took place around midday on 16th February near Mae Nam Noi road. The scammer, a young, heavily tattooed man wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt, ordered 10 ice cream sandwiches for 100 baht, claiming they were for bridge construction workers nearby. He then presented what appeared to be a 1,000 baht note, only showing parts of it to Mr. Witoon.

Believing it to be genuine, Mr. Witoon handed over 900 baht in change. It was only after the scammer sped away on a red Honda motorcycle that Mr. Witoon inspected the note, discovering it was a 100 baht bill altered with a pen to appear as a 1,000 baht note.

Reflecting on the incident, Mr. Witoon expressed his anger and disappointment. “I earn my living selling ice cream daily, and this is the first time in over ten years I’ve faced such deception. For us street vendors, losing a day’s earnings is a big hit,” he said. He urged fellow vendors to meticulously check banknotes before giving change.

The incident has been reported to the local Pho Thong police, who are reviewing CCTV footage to track down the perpetrator and bring him to justice, reported Daily News.

Mr Witoon! You are hereby declared blind!

A blind person could have recgnised that as a fake!

Bet he checks every note from now on,  Fool!!

I would call this stupidity.. Who did not see that this is fake.. ??? with a marker they added a zero.. Every change on a banknote makes it invalid...

Some mothers do have em

Yes I agree, but I had been caught out by the sodium vapor lights at BKK airport. It's 4 AM and paid a 300 Baht taxi fare I dragged out of my wallet, the driver looked at me strangely but said nothing. Was later I discovered I had stuffed the 1000 note given to me by my hotel (key deposit) amongst the 100s and they look much alike in the lighting especially if one is in a hurry.

Lesson Learnt!

I would't call that a fake 1000 baht note, he was fooled by an altered 100 Note.

A trolly pushing ice cream vendor's daily turnover is often below B500-.

So, losing 1000 must be quite a damage.

Poor victim.

Here, fakes notes are often in a high denomination(like 500, 1000).

That's why small scale sellers often refuse these banknotes.

Very careful and smart move indeed.

When I go to local market, I always prepare a few of the B100 notes and the smaller as the courtesy.

If i see that ice cream vendor about , i am going to try and buy a few of those Magnum's with some monopoly money
