A respected abbot and subdistrict head monk from Mueang district, Phayao province, Thailand, has left the monkhood after photos of him dining with his male partner surfaced. The incident, which occurred in Phetchabun province, has garnered significant public attention.

On the morning of February 19, the abbot formally stepped down from his monastic duties and left the temple, though his current whereabouts are unknown. Concerned locals gathered at the temple to ensure that its belongings were intact, as he was the sole monk residing there. It was confirmed that the abbot took nothing with him.

Residents expressed sorrow over his departure, acknowledging his substantial contributions to the temple's development. The situation appears to be a case of a single lapse in judgment leading to dramatic consequences, reported The Thaiger.

I can never understand why the private, consensual, legal, sexual activities of a person should have negative consequences for that persons professional life, is a politician suddenly incompetent at his job because he/she has an affair, is this monk now a bad person because he is in a gay relationship?  It's pure hypocrisy, his 'parish' will continue to lead a hedonistic life style while he should be above human temptation and be as white as snow, it isn't possible and everybody knows it, people want the myth not reality.

So what! Let them enjoy life together.

Where I lived in Lanna, the local head monk was known as being gay and he had a younger Thai lad as "Temple Boy" .  Sadly, both passed away as the result of AIDS, as did others in the village.
