Police Crackdown on Illegal Activities Across Bangkok

The Metropolitan Police Bureau, led by Commissioner Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, has launched a significant operation to tackle illegal activities in Bangkok. The initiative, conducted from 18 to 20 February, involved 88 police stations and the Metropolitan Investigation Division, targeting hotels, apartments, entertainment venues, and residences in high-risk areas.

 

During the crackdown, authorities inspected over 123 locations, resulting in the arrest of 145 individuals. The breakdown of those arrested includes 9 Thai nationals, 77 Chinese nationals, 32 Myanmar nationals, 14 Laotian nationals, and 13 other unconfirmed nationalities. The charges ranged across several laws, including:

 

• Drug-related offences: 1 case

• Gambling offences: 67 cases

• Immigration violations: 15 cases

• Foreign worker regulations: 68 cases

• Customs offences: 21 cases

• Intellectual property violations: 33 cases

• Other offences: 9 cases

 

Notable arrests included:

 

• Nakhon 1 Police Station: 14 Chinese nationals were apprehended for operating an online gambling ring in a condominium on Rama IX Road. Authorities seized 23 computers, 25 mobile phones, 15 cartons of Chinese cigarettes, and recovered cash amounting to THB 265,950, CNY 11,746, JPY 8,000, and USD 407.

 

• Nakhon 2 Police Station: 3 Vietnamese nationals were arrested for the illegal sale of cannabis, with over 10 types of the substance confiscated.

 

• Nakhon 3 Police Station: 2 Chinese nationals were caught hiding over 4,000 electrical goods in their home to evade taxes.

 

• Nakhon 4 Police Station: 2 Chinese nationals were arrested for illegally selling untaxed goods in a Chinese restaurant.

 

• Nakhon 5 Police Station: 13 individuals, including 1 Thai national and 12 foreigners, were arrested for illegal poker gambling, with cash and gambling equipment seized.

 

• Nakhon 6 Police Station: 1 Chinese national was caught illegally working in a restaurant.

 

• Nakhon 7 Police Station: 1 Myanmar national was arrested for working illegally at a convenience store and selling unlabelled food items.

 

• Nakhon 8 Police Station: 1 Thai national, 1 Myanmar national, and 1 Chinese national were arrested for selling counterfeit perfumes online.

 

• Nakhon 9 Police Station: 1 Chinese national was apprehended for selling counterfeit sportswear online.

 

In a coordinated effort, police also detained 2 Chinese nationals identified as Mr. Ye and Mr. Li, who were operating a call centre in Poipet and allegedly involved in fraudulent activities. Assets worth approximately THB 15 million were confiscated during their arrest.

 

The operation demonstrates a robust commitment by the Metropolitan Police Bureau to combat illegal activities and ensure the safety of the public in Bangkok.

Huh. I thought the most basic job description for cops is "cracking down on illegal activities".... does this mean less time for shakedowns and protection donations from honest businesses?

Several of our neighbours and ourselves have been complainging about a pub next door to us. This is in the middle of a reidential area, but some guy bought about 9 neighbouring houses and turned the area into an entertainment zone. The pubs stay open to 5 or 6 am (that is ok by me) , but their customers hold "parties" outside in the carpark, next to our house, all night long, screaming and shouting, preventing us from getting a good nights sleep. We complained to the owner of the area (there 2 more pubs about to open) and his only remark was "sleep during the day."

 

We have complained to the police with photographic eveidence, but nothing happens.

I'm curious as to why the exact same series of raids has been reported so differently by various media outlets. The Nation gives the same statistics, but also says that:

 

"One significant case involved the arrest of both Thai and foreign suspects accused of smuggling medical supplies worth 140 million baht for illegal sale. Police seized 41,500 medical supply items and 1.2 million baht in cash.

 

"In another case, a suspect was arrested in possession of 509 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine."

The report above was based on the information released by The Metropolitan Police Bureau. The  medical supply case you quoted, I believe is the one below, occurred on the 10 February and was previously reported.
