Thai Police Crack Down on Chinese-Run SIM Card Fraud

In a strategic raid on February 26, Bangkok police dismantled a sophisticated Chinese-operated SIM box scam operating out of a condominium in the Bang Sue district. Under the leadership of Police Lieutenant General Surapol Prembutr, a joint task force raided the apartment at 11:30 am, seizing equipment used for financial scams.

 

The room's registered owner, a Chinese national using a Thai nominee, had installed three SIM boxes capable of housing 32 SIM cards each, along with a CCTV camera for discreet surveillance. The operation was executed by Region 1 Investigation Police, Immigration Police Division 1, and Tao Poon Police Station.

 

 

The swift action followed a complaint from a victim in Mueang Udon Thani who was tricked into sending 180,000 baht, believing it was needed to clear their name in a fabricated money laundering case. Working in collaboration with Udon Thani police, investigators tracked the fraudulent activity back to the Bangkok condo.

 

DNA and fingerprint evidence were collected from the scene, and all confiscated items are now at Tao Poon Police Station for further analysis. According to ongoing investigations, the equipment had been installed for about three months as part of the scam network to defraud unsuspecting victims. Legal proceedings are underway to hold those responsible accountable, reported The Thaiger.
