International Reputation? Their international reputation is that Thailand doesn't take in refugee...period.  I'm pretty sure the actually culture that reputation.  For anyone who hasn't noticed, Thailand doesn't exactly like foreigners.  They tolerate foreigners who have money.  But if you have no money and become a drain on Thai society?  You're not exactly welcome.

There are over 86,000 Burmese living in camps along the Thai / Burma border< They are not treated the best but they at least can live in a sorta peace compared to back in their own country/

Many aren't classified as "refuges" cause then they might have  a chance of being resettled elsewhere

would not call them rich>>>

You guys are really funny. Many of you are full of prejudice against Thailand without knowing the real facts at all. If you want to know the truth about this event, I recommend visiting the Facebook page of the U.S. Embassy. In the post condemning Thailand, the comments explain the entire situation from start to finish, detailing what really happened.

I believe that this is a very dangerous decision by Thailand.  Who remembers the 2015 bomb in Bangkok, which many have suggested was 'pay-back' for the deportation of 100 or so Uyghur refugees.

If that were the reason for the 2015 bombing, then I suggest we all avoid crowded places in Thailand, especially those popular with Chinese....

You must be mistaken. Islam is a peaceful religion. They wouldn't kill and maim innocent people to further their cause.

Oh wait...

Rule 16. English is the only permitted language anywhere on ASEAN NOW, except within the Thai language  forum, where using Thai is allowed. Short Thai translations of technical terms are permitted in specialty  forums. While we make allowances for members who do not speak English as their first language, we expect everyone to make an effort to post in a manner that allows others to understand their posts. As an international  forum we have members from many countries in the world, and English is not the first language of every poster.

if that is so, why wait 11 years??

CAUSE with Trump in power, China knows there will be no backlash  😉

It's a good form of deterrence, don't you think? You Uyghurs want to enter Thailand illegally we will send you to jail for years. And after we jail you for years we will chuck you back to China. See how many more Uyghurs dare to come in illegally anymore.

I can reaffirm that the 40 Uyghurs chose to return home willingly

How can you reaffirm that?  Another Link please.

The link you provided says they were NOT not willingly repatriated!

This is one of those issues whereby any public information that is damning or unfavourable is swiftly removed.

There is an incredible degree of media control regarding this issue - and if you can't read it in the media... 'it didn't happen'.....    right ???

This is not one of those issues where we can 'rely' on news to verify a story, becase there is such a strong 'grip' on the freedom of information.

Senator Angkhana Neelapaijit emphasized that the 40 Uyghur refugees who were deported did not wish to return to China, and criticized the National Security Council (NSC) for providing inaccurate information to the upper house's human rights committee.

Angkhana, chairperson of the committee, stated that the detainees had sent letters clearly expressing their refusal to return to China, and that the committee had repeatedly requested to visit the refugees at the Immigration Detention Center (IDC), but these requests were consistently denied by the Immigration Bureau.

This photo provided by Thailand's daily web newspaper Prachatai shows trucks with black tape covering the windows leave a detention center in Bangkok, Thailand Thursday, Feb. 27, 2025.(Nuttaphol Meksobhon/Prachatai via AP)

In a controversial move, Thailand has secretly deported 40 Uyghur detainees to China after holding them for nearly 11 years. This deportation, confirmed by Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, has prompted global outrage amid allegations of human rights violations.

The transfer, carried out under the cover of darkness on February 27, was completed with a secretive motorcade from Bangkok's Suan Phlu immigration detention center to Don Mueang Airport. The detainees departed on a China Southern Airlines flight, which landed in Kashgar, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Human rights groups and international observers have strongly condemned the deportation. Phil Robertson of Asia Human Rights and Labour Advocates stated, "Thailand has finally done the unthinkable." Elaine Pearson from Human Rights Watch warned the men now risk facing torture and long-term imprisonment in China.

This move contradicts previous assurances from Thai officials and could have severe implications for Thailand's international reputation. People's Party MP Rangsiman Rome noted, "It will have a significant impact on international trust."

The deportation could strain US-Thailand diplomatic relations, as earlier expressed concerns by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio resurface. Under international law, returning individuals to countries where they might face persecution or torture is prohibited.

Uyghurs, a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority in Xinjiang, have faced allegations of human rights abuses by China, including forced detention. While China labels it as counter-terrorism measures, these claims have been denied.

Thailand's choice disrupts its role as a transit hub for Uyghurs fleeing persecution, particularly as Turkey has been a long-standing supporter of Uyghur asylum seekers. This decision rekindles debates over Thailand's refugee policies, as the detainees were held without access to the National Screening Mechanism, which aids refugees in accessing public services.

Now, under intense global scrutiny, Thailand must provide explanations and guarantee the safety of those deported. The international community waits to witness how Thailand addresses the fallout from this controversial decision, reported The Thaiger.

Its good that Thailand is on the Human Rights Committee at the UN. Maybe someone on the committee can explain what human rights means at the next session.
