Man Arrested After Taking 12-Year-Old Girl Hostage and Hijacking Songthaew in Udon Thani
Picture captured from CCTV. Police in Udon Thani have arrested a 31-year-old man who used a screwdriver to take a 12-year-old girl hostage before hijacking a songthaew. The suspect, who later turned himself in, claimed he was hallucinating from drug use and feared he was being pursued. The incident occurred at approximately 15:25 on March 2, when a man armed with a screwdriver boarded a songthaew operating on the Udon Thani–Nong Wua So route. Near Ban Pak Dong in Nikom Songkroh, Mueang Udon Thani district, he took the young girl hostage, handcuffed her, and ordered the driver to take him to an isolated area near Ban Nikom 1. He then stole more than 2,000 baht in cash and fleeing with the vehicle, leaving the driver and girl behind. Police from Huai Luang Station launched an immediate search, and by 19:30, they located the abandoned songthaew in a wooded area near Ban Nong O, Nong O subdistrict, Nong Wua So district. However, the suspect was nowhere to be found. By March 3, investigators from Kud Chap Police Station received word that the suspect had surrendered. Identified as Bird, a 31-year-old resident of Suwannakhuha district in Udon Thani, he was taken into custody. Officers later searched his rented room at a resort in Kud Chap district, where they recovered key evidence, including a 30cm screwdriver, a pair of handcuffs, and a sharp pair of scissors. The suspect led police to a sugarcane field near Ban Nong O, where he had discarded his clothing, the songthaew driver’s bag, and other items before abandoning the vehicle. CCTV footage from earlier in the day showed Bird walking through a community in Udon Thani city before heading towards the Udon-Kud Chap bypass, where he is believed to have flagged down the songthaew he later hijacked. During questioning, Bird admitted to the crime, stating that he had not planned it in advance. He claimed he had been high on methamphetamine and was paranoid that a car following him was attempting to kill him. Believing his life was in danger, he took the girl hostage and hijacked the vehicle to escape. Bird stated that he had consumed around ten methamphetamine pills before the incident. He insisted he had no intention of selling the stolen vehicle and only wanted to flee what he thought was a threat to his life. He had previously worked as a security guard in Suwannakhuha but had fallen into drug addiction and financial difficulties after his girlfriend left him. According to Deputy Superintendent Manit Kaewcharoen of Mueang Udon Thani Police Station, after abandoning the songthaew, Bird walked approximately three kilometres. Along the way, he found clothing near a farm hut and changed into them, leaving his old clothes in the sugarcane field. He then reached the banks of the Huai Luang Reservoir, where he encountered a local villager. Pretending to be a victim of an attack, he convinced the villager to ferry him across the water in a boat. Once on the other side, Bird flagged down another car and continued his escape to Kud Chap district, where he purchased new clothes at a local market. He then checked into a resort for 400 baht per night. After seeing news reports about himself on television, he panicked and feared for his safety, eventually asking the resort owner to help him surrender to the police. Police revealed that Bird had at least five outstanding arrest warrants for theft, including a motorcycle theft on February 15 in Chum Phae, Khon Kaen province. He had allegedly sold the stolen vehicle to buy methamphetamine before fleeing to Udon Thani. Authorities have charged him with robbery and drug-related offences, with further charges likely as the investigation continues. -- 2025-03-04 -

Not that I'm against repairing cars myself, but not even the dealers or service agents can get spare parts. Also there seem to be multiple failures in the same car, starting from inside door knobs cracking off, until water in the gear box oil? do they have gear boxes? aircon seems to break in all of them.- 1
