Trudeau Blasts US Tariffs, Vows Canada Will Stand Strong

In a fiery press conference during his final week in office, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the new tariffs imposed by the United States, calling the move “a dumb thing to do.” He accused the US of launching “a trade war against… its closest partner and ally, its closest friend.”

 

In response, Canada plans to impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of American goods, starting with an immediate tariff on $30 billion worth of imports. Trudeau also announced that Canada will file a legal challenge at the World Trade Organization (WTO), arguing that the tariffs violate an existing free trade agreement with the US.

 

Trudeau directly addressed the American people, making it clear that Canada did not “want this” and accusing President Donald Trump of endangering American jobs by escalating trade tensions. He reiterated that the tariffs were unjustified and unnecessary, emphasizing, “There is absolutely no justification or need for these tariffs today.” He also mentioned his past collaboration with Trump on major issues and said he expected to speak with the US president in the coming days.

 

During the press conference, Trudeau was asked whether the tariffs amounted to an act of war. He reiterated that the US had initiated a “trade war” and warned that it would hurt both nations, particularly American families. He stressed that Canada would not allow itself to be divided over this issue, urging unity among Canadians.

 

When asked what Trump hoped to achieve with the tariffs, Trudeau dismissed the US president’s claim that they were related to fentanyl as “bogus” and “completely false.” Instead, he argued that Trump’s real goal was to “see a total collapse of the Canadian economy,” making it easier for the US to annex Canada. He firmly rejected this notion, declaring, “Canada will never be the 51st state.” He added, “We are Canadians, we will fight, and we will win.”

 

Trudeau also criticized Trump’s stance on the opioid crisis, asserting that Canada had already taken significant action to combat fentanyl production. He accused Trump of undermining previous agreements between the two countries and insisted that claims of Canadian inaction on the issue were “totally false.”

 

Shortly after Trudeau’s press conference, Trump responded on social media, warning that any retaliatory tariffs from Canada would be met with an equal increase in US tariffs. Referring to Trudeau as “Governor Trudeau,” Trump appeared to continue pushing the narrative that Canada should be absorbed as a US state, a notion that Trudeau had strongly rejected.

Perhaps Trudeau is right - an attempt to destroy Canada's economy as a prelude/excuse to annexation.

 

Why?

 

Trump and his backers are very focussed on the "rare earth minerals" and Canada has a lot of them. They want them - it is to them what the oil boom was in places like Texas in the last century. The same motivation applies to Greenland and Ukraine. The current US Government is not really interested in, or bothered about domestic or international consequences, it works for its wealthy backers, who see this as an opportunity to become vastly wealthier.

And then? Equal tariffs. 

 

He is simply looking for a level playing field. 

 

If (for example) they are putting 30% on US goods but the US is only putting 10% on their goods, it is not a level playing field.

 

So in the above example, he wants them to drop their tariffs to match the 10%. If they refuse he will increase US tariffs to 30%. 

 

One way or another he will ensure the tariffs are more equal. After a few months of losing billions of dollars at 30% both ways, they will see the error of their ways and agree to 10% both ways.

 

Which is what Trump wanted in the first place.

That's Trudeau's game, and Trump is pushing back against it.  It may be a while, but most Canucks will be thanking Trump before it's over.

There's only one stat you have to be concerned with. Canada supplies about 60% of the crude oil and 99% of the natural gas that the United States imports.

 

Next to that the US gets a huge amount of its rare earth and other minerals from Canada. Without that the US is dead in the water and with that, the increasedd tariffs amount to a spike in inflation, and increased costs for the American consumer. 

 

The same applies to Mexico and China. The US cannot live without them, and Trump supporters will soon see how costly his extremely destructive and reckless behavior really is.

Oil refineries in US are not optimally configured to handle the light oil produced domestically. It will take enormous investments and time to retrofit. Trump has got the oil industry in quite a bind. In fact the whole economy is in quite a bind with his idiotic tariffs war.

Could it be their supremacy in ice hockey, their respect for their own citizens, their acceptance of non white people as valued members of society, their hatred of intolerance, their protection of nature, their willingness to help Americans in times of trouble (housing people unable to fly during 911), helping put out fires in LA, spilling blood in Afghanistan, etc etc ad infin. 

 

Canada isn't perfect, but an ill considered, abusive and sweeping statement that it is "beyond saving" is a bit rich.

It's Trump's brainless idea to get rid of income taxes. Tarrifs on everything then his election promises of no tax on tips, social security, etc can be achieved. Too bad for the little guy, though. Everything they buy will cost much more and overall their standard of living will drop. The millionaire/billionaire class will do much better as their investments will be tax free and only what they consume will cost more. Think of it as a consumption tax, benefits the rich snd screws the poor.

Canada is a great nation. A gorgeous nation. The 10th largest economy in the world. Very vibrant. Very productive. 

 

It has its share of problems, but all countries do. For Americans to be lecturing Canadians about the greatness of the US, and the sad state of Canada, at this stage of the game is a bit sad and pathetic.
