LPG Tanker Wheel Fire in Samut Prakan
Picture from responders. An incident unfolded in Samut Prakan on 16 March, as a gas tanker carrying LPG caught fire on an old section of Sukhumvit Road, near a motorcycle repair shop in Klong Dan, Bang Bo district. The alarming incident was captured on CCTV, showing flames engulfing the truck’s rear wheel. The fire broke out shortly after 13:45 as the truck’s driver attempted to slow down and stop the vehicle. The flames quickly spread, causing panic in the area. People in the repair shop yelled at the staff to flee, as the fire quickly grew out of control. In another CCTV angle, a 75-year-old woman, standing in front of a nearby grocery store, was seen raising her hands in prayer, calling for the help of Luang Pu Pan, a revered monk, to put out the fire. As the fire intensified, the truck driver and nearby residents tried unsuccessfully to douse the flames with fire extinguishers. It wasn’t until a fire truck from the Klong Dan Sub-district Fire Department arrived on the scene that the fire was brought under control. The driver of the truck, Mr. Akhom Taengsri, 44, explained that he had just picked up the LPG from a plant in Bang Pakong to deliver to a customer. He suspects the truck’s rear brake system caused heat buildup, which led to the tire bursting and sparking the fire. Despite his efforts to stop the truck and use a fire extinguisher, the flames proved too strong until the fire department arrived. Witnesses, including the elderly woman who prayed to Luang Pu Pan, expressed their deep fear that the situation could have escalated into a major explosion. The 73-year-old woman, Arun, recalled a similar incident 30 years ago when a gas truck flipped over and exploded on Phetchaburi Road, an event she survived. For the 75-year-old woman in the CCTV footage, the sight of the burning gas truck triggered memories of past tragedies. She said, “When I saw it was a gas truck, I didn’t know what to do. I have faith in Luang Pu Pan, so I immediately prayed, asking him to help prevent an explosion and to put out the fire.” The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with transporting flammable materials, and the potential for disaster in residential areas. -- 2025-03-17 -
