Traditional Songkran celebrations

No Songkran experience is complete without partaking in some cultural traditions that make this festival so special.

  • Song Nam Phra: On April 13, the first day of Songkran, locals perform Song Nam Phra, a ritual where scented water is poured over Buddha images to symbolise purification and a fresh start for the new year. This tradition, dating back to the Sukhothai era, is not only a spiritual ritual but also part of the water fights that follow.

  • Visit a Temple: Visiting a local temple during Songkran is a meaningful way to connect with Thai culture. Many families wake up early to offer alms to monks, earning merit for the new year. Whether you prepare a full meal or purchase simple offerings, the gesture of giving is what's most important.

We will (as usual) stay home during the celebrations.

We will have many family members and a couple of Western friends who want to avoid the madness staying with us.

The youngsters (and some not-so-youngsters) will be dispatched along with a minder (probably yours-truly) to the local water fight area for a thorough soaking of course.

The "oldies" (that also means me) will be going to the local wat for a traditional water pouring, of course that usually ends with a large bucket of icy, but holy, water :whistling:
