I guess you guys will also be happy to work until your last day for a dollar a day in a sweatshop factory relocated from Bangladesh, just to make Trump happy. Popular Post Presnock Posted April 3 Popular Post Posted April 3 IMHO as a novice in world trade affairs, what this seems to be to me is a shot in the arm so to speak for the BRICS countries. This will probably change some minds on whether to join the BRICS permanently or to continue waiting for BRICS to strengthen. Just my opinion but I really don't think ANY country will ever trust America until all Trumpers are out of politics in the US. Even then, with their "new" trading partners, they will probably hesitate for years to see if the US can ever be trusted again. 1 3

bamnutsak Posted April 3 Posted April 3 What is the current, pre-Liberation Day, tariff on Thai exports to the U.S.? Is this 36% universal? Meaning on everything? Is this 36% in addition to any existing tariffs? 1

Meaning on everything? Is this 36% in addition to any existing tariffs? According to the Bangkok Post, the true numbers are as follows: Quote Thailand is on the "Dirty 15" list of countries that could be affected by Trump tariffs. On average, the US tariff on Thai imports is 2%, while Thailand levies an average tariff of 8% on American products. But, as nobody knows how Trump got to his fantasy numbers, rebutting them is even more difficult, because you are not seeing a rational actor, but a destructionist. 1 2
Popular Post SHA 2 BKK Posted April 3 Popular Post Posted April 3 32 minutes ago, hotsun said: Australians should be more upset with their own government considering none of them can buy a house anymore I disagree. Both my daughters just purchased new houses. First time home buyers and before they turned 30. My parents downsized and got a brand new house with money in the bank. Interest rates are historically low. However I must add in all the above cases they didn’t overspend on some “McMansion” and they all live in regional Australia not one of the Capital Cities that has seen a growth in land prices similar to central Bangkok. They all have good paying jobs, free medical care and my daughters now have wonder kids to raise. The moral of the story is if you don’t want to live in the Capital Cities and enjoy the delights of regional Australia like camping, fishing and crabbing, housing is very affordable. The market decides housing prices - not the Government. BTW my dear old Aunt didn’t mind the increase in property values. The house she grew up in, raised a family of 7 kids and has now sold to fund her stay at a retirement village added great value to her family even though it was hand built by her father 80 years ago. 1 3 1 1
Presnock Posted April 3 Posted April 3 1 hour ago, hotsun said: Thailand will probably drop their tariffs once they feel the pain. Everything they do is a kneejerk reaction. They probably dont even understand why they have 90% tarriffs on the US With China IMHO, any trade deal they make with Thailand will result in the same manner, Thailand will be inundated with cheap, poor quality merchandise and will in turn send no extra merchandise to China at competitive costs. We that have been here for any length of time have seen exactly that many times yet the Thai leaders with Chinese ancestors always seem to be willing to sign up to poor trade agreements for the Thais and usually within a short period of time there are complaints from the competing local merchants and arrests of Chinese owned businesses doing unfair pratices. This whole scheme of Trump has already affected the value of the dollar and unless the Thai baht is weakened, anyone getting dollars for baht will lose out IMHO. 1

TheAppletons Posted April 3 Posted April 3 1 hour ago, jts-khorat said: Is it true though, that Thailand has an average tariff of 90% or even just 72% on US goods? I call bullsh*t. Wherever Trump has the numbers from, I could not find a single statistic that comes even close to those numbers. So maybe it would be nice if one of his followers could enlighten us with such a source? This is what the Bangkok Post had to say: https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/general/2993202/us-tariffs-expected-to-dent-thai-gdp They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took the trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to the USA. So there's a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to the US are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges the US. (The math works for every country, btw.) What extraordinary nonsense this is. 1 1

Popular Post rimmae2 Posted April 3 Popular Post Posted April 3 Where is USA on this list? Does the average or any American have the mentality to sit making shirts all day as people in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, etc do? How many years does it take to train people for skilled jobs, who will invest in new businesses, innovation when people don't know how long the trade war will last and what the impact will be? More damage to the world and any American who can see past the end of his Trump nose in the last 3 months compared to any 3 month period since the end of WW II. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=89978449&url=https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/rankings/Share_of_manufacturing/&ved=2ahUKEwjTlZv7zrqMAxXFS2cHHdwFGvgQFnoECBYQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2rOvEVIHBW-lGPl9TlY165 1 2 4

Imagine you are a multinational company, maybe a large car manufacturer. You start the horrendous investment to relocate a car factory from the Thai Eastern Seaboard to the US, start building, start hiring. Then, from one minute to the next, the tariffs are gone again. You are out of pocket by the billions of dollars. The time frames needed to make a policy like that of Trump work is counted in years, maybe decades. A guy changing his opinion with every social media post he makes will simply wreck everything, because nobody can trust his word. Yeah heard one analyst estimate that it will probably take a decade for all to settle down and the US consumer (if still around at all) can then begin to "reap the rewards" in any from the Trump tariff scheme! He inherits a basically booming economy compared to much of the world, and immediately has destroyed that plus all the retirement funds people had been basing them on their 501 market funds. Sad for those folks because at the rate thngs are trending in the US today, Social Security may just fold too! I sure hope I am wrong. 1 1 3
