Thaksin's Coalition Threat: Support Casino Bill or Risk Expulsion

Thaksin Shinawatra has turned up the heat on coalition partners, warning that failure to back the Pheu Thai-led casino bill could result in their expulsion from the government.

Insiders reveal that Thaksin, father of Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, expects unwavering support for the legislation that looks to open casinos within entertainment complexes, when it comes up for vote this Wednesday. The move comes despite fierce opposition from various societal sectors and former senators.

The billionaire power player is reportedly using his influence to cajole coalition partners into line, hinting at dissolving the House of Representatives if they defy the Pheu Thai party. A fresh general election could loom as a consequence for those not toeing the line.

The coalition members in Thaksin’s sights include the Bhumjaithai party, Ruam Thai Sang Chart, and Prachachart, which are pivotal players in the coalition ecosystem.

Pheu Thai champions the casino proposal, arguing it would boost tourism in hotspots like Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok by drawing wealthy international tourists, potentially infusing millions of Baht into the economy.

Despite this vision of economic revival, opposition to the scheme is potent. The bill, controversially postponed from last week's parliamentary agenda, has sparked protests from anti-Thaksin activists, who may hit the streets again when the bill is tabled Wednesday.

The outcome of Wednesday's vote could have significant repercussions, either catalysing a major legislative reform aimed at bolstering tourism revenue or shaking up the coalition government to its core. The casino bill remains at the heart of a fervent debate, balancing economic objectives with societal concerns.

Got to love Thai politics.

Openly discussing threats, bribery, blackmail and coercion to make people vote a certain way.

His puppet as usual, the first one worried about jail time if she'll return.

Surely if that’s “not getting involved with politics” & threatening others who won’t agree - what is? They should re-arrest him & this time court trail!

Sick of seeing and hearing this lizard in the news

If he kicks out enough partners, wont he be unable to keep his coalition majority intact?

Seems to me these are suicidal idle threats

I was thinking Trump

Seems Thaksin got stopped in his tracks by someone.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced that legislation to legalise casinos in selected Thai tourist destinations has been indefinitely postponed. The move comes amidst significant opposition both within parliament and across various societal sectors.

Oh leave the poor man alone!

All he wanted to do was to return home and play with his grandchildren.🤣🤣🤣

Putting aside the politics and likely negative social impacts, from an economic standpoint, IF this goes forward, wouldn't it make sense to create other economic zones?  Udon, Ubon, Nong Kai, or say, Hat Yai could all use a focus and create other centers of gravity in the country for workers, hotels, restaurants, development, etc. instead of increasing the overdevelopment at the locations listed. The rich heeled in Bangkok won't be as happy but a longer-term benefit for other areas of the country possibly. I'm not advocating for casinos at all, they attract all sorts of problems, but IF it is a done deal, why not help other parts of the country economically.
