Now I'm very old and have no idea exactly what a digital nomad is ,but I'm thinking I would like to learn to be one so I have something to do all day if & when I retire it will be exciting 

 

I may not retire and be like some of my work colleagues who are in their 70's and millionaires in assets but keep working day after day to socialise and he just rather than sit all day in their homes alone if their partner has died etc 

 

But please can we get back to the core subjects of digital nomads !!!!

 

Quite frankly I'm scared to retire and be locked up all day and bored out of my mind in that horrid View Talay 2B in Pattaya like I was back in 2024 but that's another story 

 

But I could retire if I had something like being a digital nomad , would it be exciting?

 

I watch YouTube vids and I see them laying by a pool in Dubai or Bali with a laptop on their lap sipping a pina colada 

 

It looks exciting 

 

What is exactly a digital nomad, would they want me ?

A digital nomad is simply a person who works remotely, either for themselves or for an organisation/company. Their physical presence is not required, just their output. Therefore as long as they have internet access and a suitable device, they are good to go.

A digital nomad is basically someone who travels the world, often grifting, while pretending to hold some sort of gainful employment. They sit in cafés, always purchasing the least expensive item on the menu, with a laptop open and free WiFi at the ready, occasionally typing something just so the barista doesn’t ask them to leave. Behind the scenes, they’re usually living off some form of passive income, cryptocurrency gains, or their parents’ credit card. Or a youtuber could be a digital nomad. I could see you doing that. Walking the streets of Pattaya and Jomtiem.. discussing the prison like condos or the cost of beer - doing surveys with expats about their age or lifestyle or finances. Could be entertaining.

Yes, I think it's wise that you are scared. 

I have stopped working and I am going a bit crazy.

And I do not want to sit in bars. 

 

A digital nomad makes money online and travels. You don't need to travel. You can stay in one place. But at least you're working and keeping busy. 

 

But you need a skill to make money online. Or you can start a Youtube channel. It is best to do some kind of work or find a hobby or retirement can become dreadfully dull.

If your health is good .... a nomadic life might be interesting ... you can rent monthly in thailand, no need to buy a condo.

 

but realistically if you're past a certain age, it's tiring to move around. digital nomad is a young man's game. 

 

 

any schmuck can call himself "digital nomad" - it is as dumb as "youtuber", "blogger", "photojournalist" and a whole lotta similar "terms". 

If I have a notebook - I'm working remotely, right?

If I travel to the nearby beachfront - I'm kinda "nomadic".

Moving around is easy if you travel light and are fit.

Working remotely for MNCs and in the oil and gas, manufacturing, industrial design sectors etc. 

 

My Thai wife was head hunted by a MNC while doing her PhD in the States, she's been with them since, she recently went back to work in their US based HQ, but for a number of years previously was working remotely as we traveled the world.

Originally, and the “truest” form of being a digital nomad is someone that travels enough so they don’t become tax resident in any country.  

 

The term has been loosened more recently to include anyone that works remotely while travelling.

 

I pay corporation tax and personal tax in the UK but can work anywhere so fit the second definition but not the first.

 

To address some other misconceptions by other posters:

• Not all digital nomads are cheap. I charge my clients over £1000 a day i.e. equivalent of over 40,000baht a day so don’t work very much but can spend what I want. 
• Not all digital nomads are “influencers” walking around with cameras. Other types include consultants (me), traders (shares, commodities, currencies), software engineers, etc. 
• Not all digital nomads have never had a proper job. I worked full time for over 20 years in a number of major international companies before I’d built up the experience, contacts and financial security to set up my own business.

Do you think Digital Nomad is a company that hires people? You need to have a certain skillset that is able to be applied online. Like making websites, be a youtuber, running affiliate business, or drop shipping. You might be a SEO expert on off-page, on-page or technical SEO. Run an online store......and so on. As a digital nomad you will run your own business online.

What the F-k are you posting? Old age thinking! Have a "real job" with steady monthly salary. Really? That went out the door when the dinosaurs was extinct. A real job? So, sitting working online as a consultant is not a real job? What have you been doing in you life? Working in a car factory, as a painter in the Union or shop clerk? Indeed.  It's my perception that a lot of digital nomads are basically in the late teens/early twenties phase, where there is little pressure to really achieve anything and they don't have any responsibility, but do have lots of time and energy.  They then pretend that this fact, coupled with the fact that they are working online and travelling on a budget, means they are achieving something amazing in life.

 

Nothing wrong with doing any of this, just the whole "look at my amazing digital nomad lifestyle that I have made for myself" thing, while essentially being on an extended gap-year, is a little annoying.

no, some people pull it off as they literally have real jobs that allow them to work online.

on my flight here recently, a guy on the plane said his company lets him work anywhere. 

i think he manages an IT team and it can all be done remotely. 

I never had a job like that, but it's a relatively new phenomenon.

Other people are trying their luck with "drop shipping from Amazon" and don't do so well.
