Accident Drowning: 14-Year-Old Boy Dies in Wang River Despite Friends’ Brave Rescue Attempt

A 14-year-old boy drowned in the Wang River in Lampang Province after a group of friends attempted to rescue him, only to be pulled under themselves due to the victim’s larger build.

 

The incident occurred around 14:30 on April 20th. Pol. Sub-Lt. Warathep Srinoy, Deputy Inspector of Investigation at Thoen Police Station, received a report of a drowning near a water pumping station in Ban Wiang, Moo 2, Lom Raet Subdistrict, Thoen District. Rescue units from Lampang Rescue Association, Oombun Rescue, and Lom Raet Municipality Rescue Team were dispatched to the scene.

 

Upon arrival, officers found a group of distraught 14-year-old boys, visibly shaken. The group had reportedly gone to the Wang River to catch fish. They split up, searching nearby spots. The victim, who could not swim, ventured toward the middle of the river. When he began to struggle and submerge, his friends tried to help but were pulled under by his weight. Fearing for their own safety, they were forced to let go.

 

Rescue divers searched the river and later recovered the boy’s body, which was found face down at the riverbed. The body was brought ashore where police coordinated with medical staff for an initial examination before transferring the deceased to hospital.

 

Investigations are continuing and the boy’s body has been released to his family for religious rites and funeral services.
