A birthday dinner ended in disaster when a family of five was involved in a fatal road crash in Tha Muang District, Kanchanaburi Province.

At approximately 21:30 on 5 May, emergency services were called to the scene on U-Thong Road, opposite the entrance to Nong Ya Dok Khao Sub-district Municipality. A white Isuzu D-Max pickup truck driver, had reportedly lost control and crashed into a roadside electricity pole after a suspected tyre blowout.

Police and medical responders found the vehicle severely damaged, with all five occupants trapped inside. Rescue personnel used hydraulic cutting tools to extract the victims.

The driver, Mr Natthawut Phansomboon, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene, as were his wife, Ms Suphansa Odthon, and their eldest son, Mark, aged 11. The couple’s two younger children, a nine-year-old boy named Mac and one-year-old daughter Haru, suffered serious injuries. Both were rushed to Phahon Phonpayuhasena Hospital in a critical condition.

Rescue teams attempted CPR on the 11-year-old boy at the scene for over 15 minutes but were unable to revive him.

Witnesses living nearby reported hearing a loud bang consistent with a tyre blowout moments before the truck spun out of control and struck the utility pole. The rear right tyre was found to have exploded, likely causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash violently.

Family members of Mr Natthawut arrived at the scene in tears after learning of the crash. They confirmed that the family had just been returning home from a birthday meal celebrating Mr Natthawut’s 29th birthday in central Kanchanaburi.

Police from Nong Khao Station have launched an investigation into the incident, though early reports suggest the crash was caused by the sudden tyre failure.
