Mobile Phone Internet that is cheaper but is not unlimited in Bangkok - How does it work?

The regions make no difference at all. Promos come and go. People claim unlimited Internet. But unlimited 1 Mbps? 4 Mbps? 10Mbps? As if that little detail is not important...

The figures they quote in speed are somewhat misleading. You may on one connection get 100Mbs and the same connection an hour later could be less than 1Mbs. What they are giving you is the speed for the connection to their server not the entire internet.

I have no idea what Photoguy it trying to convey. I can guarantee that he has not ever used a capped speed unlimited data pack, but yet he acts as if he knows how they work.

I can guarantee you that the speed is dependent on many things. As you obviously don't understand communications let me put it simply for you.

if you are going to connect to say Google you will make the connection through many switches before you get to Google. Each switch has a maximum speed, lets say it is 100Mbs. That is shared among everyone who is connected to that switch. If there is just a couple of connections you will have a fast link but if it is almost to capacity you will have a slow link.

Do you understand now as to why the speed checkers tell you little more than you have a connection.

Sounds like Cameroni's girl is trying to rip him off. DTAC have 12 month 6Mbps SIM with 100GB of data per month, for 1800 baht or 60GB of Max speed for the same.

If you want to go monthly, AIS regularly throw a 15 Mbps/50GB package at me at 200 baht per month or 5GB of 5G, 50GB of 15Mbps(slowing to 384kbps when depleted), inclusive unlimited calls and inclusive unlimited SUPER WiFI usage, for 220 baht.

Photoguy is rambling about something that is completely irrelevant.

We are discussing the maximum speed of the supplied packages. KannikaP is NOT receiving 108Mbps with his 15Mbps capped speed packages.

Ookla Speedtest will show you cached speeds that you will not ever achieve on a capped speed pack.

That will be borne out when @KannikaP publishes his https://testmy.net results 😊

Is he suggesting that @KannikaP is getting 108 Mbps on a 15Mbps package?

No, Kannika is telling you that Kannika's Ookla Speedtest is showing 111 down and 53.5 up, on an AIS 5G 15 Mb/s SIM card, no wifi connected.

Meteor Speedtest shows 67.3 down and 31.3 up. with a 25 ms ping but only connected to AIS 4G

Irrelevant to you as you have no understanding of networks

Working Internet....if the network signal is not good in her apartment, then all bets are off.

Find out which network gives the best signal in her apartment and then come back to ask about a suitable package on that network. Don't just go by advertised figures. DTAC might advertise 20 Mbps, but if she can only get 2Mbps in her apartment....useless. So find out.

So I guess people voluntarily switch off their internet data, so they don't hit the 40 GB limit.

Do I understand this correctly?

They might, or they may be like me.

I have normal home internet and often use the wi-fi at coffee shops.

I mostly use my internet data for Google Maps or reading the news when out and about.

I'm not streaming games or media, so 40GB a year is plenty.

Coffee shops would be a good place for 'Man In The middle' attacks.

I make sure I only go to cafes with all female staff....

Just returned from overseas. Need a new SIM card. Do I buy the card first, then sign up for a year-long top-up tariff, or should I look for a SIM card that has a one-year duration? (Budget: 220 to 300 baht top-up each month, need mostly for internet and app sign-ups. Speed not important.)

Yes, correct. Unlimited packages will come with very slow speeds if they are cheap.

So I was told that in Bangkok mobile phone intenet is more expensive than in Chiang Mai, where I pay 300 Baht for unlimited internet that is always on. Is it true that in Bangkok mobile phone internet is more expensive and that people opt for not unlimited internet but internet that is sometines on and sometimes off? Is that a real thing? How does that work?

Whoever told you that is talking nonsense. Your location is irrelevant. You download the app and check the packages of your provider. They will be the same anywhere in Thailand.

Why would you need 40 GB per month for reading the news and using Google Maps? I get 10GB per month, and my heaviest use was only 5GB, using it for everything you can imagine.

StayInThailandTooMuch...it depends on which network works best for you at your location. Once that is determined, you can then look at what is available.

For instance, AIS have one 15 Mbps 12 month package available as a Ready SIM and two 12 month packages available as an add-on. 50GB per month and 100GB per month. 2200 & 2750 baht respectively.

https://m.ais.co.th/KYHaElpFx

https://m.ais.co.th/netmarathonMAX100GB12M

Buying a SIM first allows you to test the network before committing for a year.

If you have a Thai partner, then look at GoMo. 99 baht for the SIM and then 259 baht for unlimited 15 Mbps.

Turns out not all packages are on the provider's page, some are distributed by third party vendors, the best deals in fact.

You're talking about special deals that pop up all week through special messages from your provider, but that's irrelevant, as you cannot subscribe to them unless you've been offered the deal. I just happen to be on one myself - 10GB per month at full speed for 100 baht. I've been using it for 2 years.

No, he's not talking about special deals......

It's exactly as described. Completely different SIM packs than on their website.

Example: https://www.alottechs.com/product/simtep-6mbps

Where is this Unlimited 6 Mbps 12 month SIM on the TRUE website? https://www.true.th/en/prepaid#sim

Another possibility for the lovesick 🙂 is https://finnmobile.io/en Currently 60 GB of full speed data together with unlimited 20 Mbps data plus 600 minutes of any network calls. 250 baht per month. Monthly is best, so you aren't still paying after the breakup. They use part of the TRUE/DTAC network on 850MHz, 1800MHz and 2100MHz.

Though don't know anyone here who has reported using them.

I've also just returned and staying for a few months this time. I ordered the AIS Zeed sim from Lazada for 50B. You get 2GB 5G + unlimited WIFI for the first month plus a load of stuff for kids which I don't need.

From months 2-12 you have to pay 150B p/m to keep it active. Who knows, maybe I'll just bin the package and get a top-up package like 50B p/m for 300MB. I rarely go out so won't use it much. 🤔

EDIT: I'll probably only use packages while I'm here then just pay to keep the service going till I get back. Main reason I'm getting it is because I need a permanent number for banking apps.
