A chaotic scene unfolded in Phuket when a taxi driver, allegedly under the influence, collided with a parked car and attacked the other driver with a golf club. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated online, occurred around 12:19 p.m. yesterday, outside a 7-Eleven in the Baan Lipon area of Srisoonthorn, Thalang.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Sathaporn Suwanmanee, was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.293, nearly six times Thailand’s legal limit. The altercation began when Sathaporn, driving a green-plate Isuzu taxi, rear-ended a black sedan parked by Kengpong Nuansri, a 38-year-old tool salesman who had stopped to shop.

Eyewitness Ms Fon described the shocking sequence of events: "I saw the taxi hit the car, and then the driver just got out and started swinging the golf club. It went on for about 10 minutes, but I couldn’t see what started it properly because of other cars in the way."

Following the attack, Sathaporn fled the scene. However, police quickly initiated a manhunt and apprehended him at his residence in Moo 6, Srisoonthorn, just over two hours later at 2:50 p.m. During questioning, he admitted to consuming alcohol before the incident, and a breathalyser test confirmed his intoxication.

Sathaporn now faces multiple charges, including drink-driving, assault, and causing injury while intoxicated. His case has been forwarded to the Phuket Provincial Police Commander as it moves toward prosecution.

Sathaporn remains in custody as legal proceedings unfold, with authorities taking swift action to address the serious charges stemming from the midday meltdown. The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the potential dangers posed by intoxicated drivers.

Taxi driver way over the limit.

Anywhere else they would chuck the book at him being in a position of trust. But it looks like he's off to the monks for a day out instead.
