In a tragic incident on May 19, two members of a volunteer protection unit were killed and two others injured in a targeted shooting in Pattani province. The attack, which occurred at 5:30 PM in Mueang Mai Kaen district’s Don Sai subdistrict, has shocked the local community.

The assailants disguised themselves as Muslim women, wearing hijabs and arriving on motorcycles. As they reached the village's main road, they opened fire with unidentified long firearms on a group of five local volunteers who were out for a run. The volunteers are part of a local subdistrict protection team tasked with safeguarding their community.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of 31-year-old Suhaimi Abu and 29-year-old Marosalee Tosing, while two others sustained injuries. The group was on their usual run from their office through La Waeng village when the attack occurred. Following the ambush, the attackers swiftly fled the scene on their motorcycles, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

Authorities are intensifying their efforts to investigate the incident, exploring potential motives and attempting to identify the perpetrators. The attack underscores the ongoing security challenges faced in the region, highlighting the dangers volunteer protection units confront in carrying out their duties.

As the investigation progresses, further details will be provided to shed light on this heinous act. The community is left grappling with the loss of two dedicated volunteers who sought to protect the very community now grieving their loss.
