Cheese - basic cheddar one kilo block is now under 300 baht  in Makro - a lot less than one baht a gram (30 satang) similar price to UK.

You are comparing 1kg blocks to price per gram to try say it's cheaper in Thailand??  🤔

Yes. Compared 400 gram Sainsbury's block to one kilo block. No wastage. Actually did the maths and Makro block is actually about 10% cheaper. Smaller pieces of cheese in Thailand are double the cost.

 

Sometimes freeze part of the block - perfectly ok when thawed again.

Cheese is a matter of taste. I admit to not liking most continental cheeses, either to waxy or rank. only one i like is brie. Plenty of other types of British cheese, Cheshire, Wensleydale. Double Gloucester, but rarely available here and always expensive (4-5 times as much). The Aro Cheddar is actually not to bad, better than the mild cheap stuff in UK supermarkets. mainly use cooked (on toast, toppings).

 

As for your other products, do not eat cornflakes; i get Muesli at about 150 baht a kilo (cheaper if i make myself) and practically never buy chocolate in Thailand as also overpriced. I do like the odd McVitie's Chocolate digestive, which are a similar price here to the UK (but frequently welded together!).

 

If you are rich enough, you can buy what you want. But most of us have to live on a budget. So i buy very few European products, only locally made versions (if good enough, but reasonable quality harder to find). My diet is about 90% Asean sourced. Just takes a while to find what you want. Been here long enough to have done this.

Did you cherry pick to make this post? With 30 Baht you can't get this stuff in a normal local market, unless you live in some inland town.

I go to the local markets every day and I assure you that 30 THB will only buy you pineapple.

Like with most things... it depends.

If you want to live like a local, then yes, still cheap and doable, but if you have preferences for healthy organic food, going out to western restaurants/bars, partying, or imported food/drinks or stuff, then it can be very overpriced.

They are very smart here with leaving the locals alone to have their not expensive stuff/life but exploiting those who want anything nice... sure have to pay for that through the snout, unless you are very cunning and can do stuff yourself from scratch (like cooking) and going to cheaper places to get stuff.

Also, the tourist-trap cities will gouge you on everything just because because, but once out of them you can be okay. There is much whataboutery on this topic, but it is all cleverly designed to fleece those who are not local and can't do without their comforts or indulgencies... but those with discipline and less fancy likes fare better. Most Thais use the Blue Flag government shops or markets for most things, but you too as a foreigner can use them, just have to find them.

Thailand can be as inexpensive or as costly as you prefer. If you want to learn how to be cheap, live with an average Thai person for a while.

People really think you can't get cheap Lazada junk back in your own country. I just need to step to China Town and can get t shirts for $1-2. That's less than 25 baht

10฿ for the tomatoes, 10฿ pineapple and 10฿ bell peppers, looks about right at a rural kad in these here parts.
