The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has declared that charging public transport passengers higher fares based on their size or weight is both illegal and discriminatory. This announcement comes in response to complaints about public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers demanding additional fees from plus-size commuters.

 

LTFRB Chair Teofilo Guadiz III condemned this practice, emphasizing that it breaches transport regulations and fundamental human rights. "Regardless of a passenger's size, the fare covers one person. This practice of overcharging is not only unlawful—it is discriminatory and fundamentally unjust," Guadiz asserted in a statement shared on Facebook.

 

He further stressed that public transportation must be "accessible and respectful" to all passengers, asserting that discrimination should not exist within the nation's transport system. PUV drivers and operators found engaging in such practices will be held accountable and face penalties, including fines, suspension, or franchise revocation, according to LTFRB guidelines.

 

To combat this issue, the LTFRB urges the public to report any incidents of overcharging or discrimination. Reports can be made via their hotline 1342, official social media platforms, or through email at [email protected].

 

This enforcement action aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s mandate to ensure inclusive and dignified public services for all Filipinos, reinforcing the government's commitment to equity and fairness in transportation services.

Of course they should have to pay more if they are taking up 2 seats that means one less paying passenger. Then they might get the hint and cut back on the rice and Jolibee fried food.

Could you imagine a scale when you get on that calculates your fare from your weight?

 

All the heavy foreigners would be complaining and Thai girls would insist the scale is broken that they only weigh 45 kgs.
