In the last week of May, Thailand recorded 65,880 new COVID-19 cases and three fatalities, according to Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin. These cases, documented from May 25 to 31, signify a downturn from the yearly peak of the outbreak.

Minister Somsak noted that those aged 30-39 constitute the largest share of new cases, totalling 12,403, followed by individuals in their 20s with 10,368 cases, and those aged 60 and above with 9,590 cases. The disease has been naturally spreading during the rainy season, which tends to exacerbate the spread of respiratory illnesses.

While the number of cases may appear alarming, Minister Somsak reassured the public that the Division of Epidemiology has indicated that the outbreak has peaked and is now declining. He emphasized the importance of continuing preventive measures, such as wearing face masks in crowded settings, conducting self-tests, regular hand washing, eating properly cooked food, and avoiding touching one's face.

In response to the current situation, he has directed medical professionals to ensure an adequate supply of medicine and medical supplies, particularly for patients and vulnerable populations.

In addition to COVID-19, Minister Somsak mentioned a concurrent decline in influenza cases. The highest incidence of flu occurred among children aged five to nine years, while the elderly and those with underlying health conditions experienced the highest flu-related fatalities.

Overall, with the peak of this year’s COVID-19 outbreak seemingly passed, the focus remains on vigilance, personal protective measures, and preparedness to safeguard public health as Thailand continues to manage the situation.
