In an exciting development in the aviation sector, Thai Airways and Turkish Airlines have inked a Joint Business Agreement (JBA) aimed at bolstering flight services between Bangkok and Istanbul. The agreement was formally signed during the 81st International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, India, marking a significant partnership between Thailand's flagship carrier and Turkey’s national airline.

This collaboration comes on the heels of Thai Airways’ recent launch of a direct service between Bangkok and Istanbul on December 1, 2023. The route operates seven days a week and has become a cornerstone for Thai Airways as they extend their reach into the European market. It suitably aligns with Turkish Airlines’ strategy to expand their network, enhancing the existing Star Alliance partnership between the two carriers.

The primary objective of this joint effort is to boost international tourism between Thailand and Turkey, strategically leveraging Turkish Airlines’ extensive global connections alongside Thai Airways’ stronghold in regional markets. The initiative is seen as a catalyst for increased tourism flow, enhancing connectivity between the thriving destinations of Southeast Asia and the vibrant cultural hubs of Turkey.

Chai Eamsiri, CEO of Thai Airways, disclosed that the codeshare flights under the JBA are set to commence with the winter schedule of 2025 to 2026, once necessary approvals are obtained. This rescheduling promises passengers seamless travel experiences not only between Thailand and Turkey but also to numerous other destinations accessible through both airlines' networks.

Professor Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee of Turkish Airlines, expressed his anticipation for the potential tourism growth this partnership might foster. “We are thrilled to deepen our collaboration with Thai Airways. This step is monumental in fortifying our tourism capabilities between Turkey and Thailand, promising smooth, expanded networks, and diverse travel options," Bolat remarked.

Both the Thai and Turkish civil aviation authorities have shown support by agreeing to increase the passenger flight frequencies from the current 42 flights. This underscores a mutual commitment to boosting travel volumes and opening new travel frontiers for tourists and business travellers alike. Through this partnership, both carriers seek not only to enhance their operational reach but also to tap into new markets, promising enriched travel experiences and broader global connectivity for their passengers.
