Two University Students Killed After Pickup Truck Slams Into Power Pole in Samut Prakan

Death struck on the morning of 6 June, when a pickup truck carrying two university students veered off the road and slammed into a power pole and roadside food stall in Samut Prakan, killing both occupants.

Pol. Lt. Worakrit Pharuang, Deputy Inspector of Bang Sao Thong Police Station, received an emergency call about the fatal accident which occurred at approximately 06:00 in front of Uncle Sam Market on Thepharak Road, kilometre marker 26, Bang Sao Thong Subdistrict.

Emergency responders, including medical personnel from Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital and the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, rushed to the scene.

There, they discovered a damaged Chevrolet pickup truck bearing Bangkok registration plates. The vehicle had ploughed into a roadside food tent, leaving debris and damage in its wake. The wreckage was strewn across the pavement, with a broken power pole leaning precariously nearby.

Beside the vehicle lay the lifeless body of a man, later identified as 22-year-old Mr. Sarawut, a resident of Bang Phli District. He had been ejected from the passenger seat upon impact and was found with a broken neck and a severe head injury, lying in a pool of blood.

The driver, Mr. Ballung aged 21 and a third-year student at Assumption University (ABAC), was discovered unconscious in the driver’s seat with his seatbelt still fastened. Despite efforts by rescue personnel to resuscitate him at the scene, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to relatives, the two young men were cousins. Mr. Ballung had been driving from Bang Bo District toward their home in Pruksa Avenue housing estate, located just a short distance from the crash site. Family members speculated that heavy rainfall overnight may have caused the road to become dangerously slippery, contributing to the loss of control.

Police officers have launched a full investigation, reviewing CCTV footage that reportedly captured the exact moment of the crash. All evidence from the scene has been collected and the bodies have been sent to Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital for autopsy.
