Moving to stay in other province things to consider.

After a year at Jomtien, I am thinking about moving to other province - Bangkok, Udon Thani etc. I have things to consider - my agent assist non o visa, my Bangkok bank account at Pattaya branch, my vehicle purchased here at Pattaya car dealer and everything else. Anyone got experience to share?

Everything except the agent, shouldn't be a problem.  TH is computerized.

 

One thing I'd be concerned about, is air quality, so BKK and UT, wouldn't be on any list.  Or any place above Chumphon.

 

Guessing an agent can be found for most Imm offices, as long as not too rural, which seems you're not looking for.

Why do you want to move, Jomtien is OK. Easy for farang to live here.

No to Udon Thani unless it's simply to save money and really, really tone things down.  It's not a pretty city, either.  People are likely friendlier, but my feeling is that it won't make up for the negatives.  15 baht charge for everytime you use an ATM outside of the province where you set up your bank.  I've gotten a million of those so scan with the app or only take out 30,000 at a time.

A good reasons to go outside well known expat typical locations like  Pattaya/Jomtien, Chiang Mai, Cha Am/Hua Hin, is beause you got connections there. The expat community in Udon is small and old, same for any other place around, where they guys have connection's because of their ladies. 

 

I'm getting more and more found of Korat, but would never have moved there as a single man. 

 

If you have interests connecting you to some places, go ahead rent a flat and try.

In general the bank account won't be a problem. Nevertheless, if you are doing something atypical you might be asked to return to your branch you open the account. Unavoidable. I'd suggest that you take your book into your branch and tell them your signature has changed and you've had problems withdrawing money. Like to update your signature. Tellers are notorious for rejecting signatures. They will push you back to your branch that's going to be a bit of a hassle for you especially upcountry

 

When you have settled you can go into a branch and ask if they will transfer the money into their branch by opening an account there. That might work.

 

I'd really not recommend moving up country myself. Double especially if you're single. I think most people live up country because they don't like / can't deal with Bangkok not necessarily because they love being up country.

 

Other than the dearth of green space - Bangkok is a nice place to live. I think it's really nice for single people cuz it has energy that you will lack because of no relationship - but it's obviously not for everyone. People tend to think of Bangkok as a huge, traffic choked swirling mass of humanity. I prefer to think of it as a lot of tiny little neighborhoods, markets and great transport. I definitely wouldn't be living on Sukhumvit. The cool season the air can get quite grungy. This is a time to get out and about and see the rest of Thailand if not Southeast Asia.

 

I would sell the car. You will move to another province and have to re-register it with new plates. If you don't like being there you'll have to do that again and again and again. There's no need to have any car in Bangkok. I lived in Bangkok for 15 years and absolutely love the convenience of the subway

You really need to be based somewhere, then travel to different parts of the country, and test places out, for at least a month.   Get a feel what it is like living there, before making the move.

 

Then if buying in, rent for a year or 2, before making that plunge.  

 

Even though we visited where we live now, a couple times a year, over 10 yrs running, we rented for well over 1 year, before deciding to live here.  Week long holiday is completely different than every day living, during the changing seasons; hot/cool, touristy/non, rainy/dry, smog/fresh air.

You do not need to re-register you car or motorbike when moving. We still drive our on Hua Hin plates and pay the yearly taxes in Chaiyaphum. 

 

To change phone numbers and adress in your bank branch, you need to physically go to the bank you created your account. That's a hassle,

I agreed Jomtien is easy and really good considering so many factors. But I am just itchy feet and thinking about exploring other type of lifestyle.

If that's really all it is then I'd recommend you go travel about before giving up your life there. You even have a car.

 

Traveling low season - hot or rainy. You enjoy the ocean in cool season

 

Traveling high season - you get away from the madness of Pattaya. It's cool everywhere.

 

Before you leap anywhere I'd sort out are non-negotiables. For instance farang restaurants or farang food in general. The ocean, etc.

 

For myself I could never live up country and that includes Chiang Mai let alone some dire little city in Issarn.
