In an uncommon yet intriguing event, a 55-year-old resident of Phayao province, Pongsak Thuknuek, welcomed an unexpected visitor into his home—a softshell turtle, locally known as pla pha. This rare occurrence took place at his abode on Maetam Sai Nai Road, nestled in the Mae Tam subdistrict of the Mueang Phayao district.

Pongsak's house is quite some distance from any natural water sources and is bordered by roads, making the turtle's appearance truly extraordinary. Upon discovering the creature, its dimensions were noted as approximately 10 inches in length and 8 inches in width, with the turtle appearing healthy and intact. It's thought that the turtle could either be a recent hatchling or was foraging naturally in search of food.

Living in the area for many decades, Pongsak expressed genuine amazement at the incident. The arrival of the turtle, particularly given its journey from any watery habitat, felt like a sign of good fortune to him—a perspective deeply woven into the cultural fabric of northern Thailand.

Tradition in this region holds that an unusual animal entering one's home signifies a positive omen or good luck. Softshell turtles, in particular, are considered auspicious, viewed not only as unique creatures but as harbingers of prosperity, embodying some mysterious benevolent power.

Embracing this time-honoured belief, Pongsak decided to keep the turtle safely in a container. Inspired by his unexpected guest, he also decided to try his luck by using his house number, 39/2, in a local lottery. The notion that this animal might usher in good fortune and wealth has provided Pongsak and his family with a sense of excitement and hope.

While it remains to be seen whether the turtle will indeed bring prosperity, this incident has undeniably brought charm and a touch of mystery to Pongsak’s household, reflecting the rich tapestry of beliefs that continue to thrive in northern Thai culture.
