In a heart-wrenching case, a court in Nghe An Province sentenced Vu Van Hao, 43, to eight years in prison following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of six people, including four young children. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the devastating consequences of road accidents.

On January 1st, Hao embarked on a routine journey from Tuong Duong District to Ky Son District to purchase dong leaves used for wrapping traditional cakes. Travelling in the late afternoon, he descended a steep hill in neutral gear, which led to a catastrophic loss of control. As he approached a sharp bend, the truck veered onto the wrong side of the road and crashed into the home of Va Ba Do.

Inside the house at the time were Do's mother, his sister-in-law, and four children—all aged between three and eight—who were the sons of Do's brothers. The impact was so severe that it instantly claimed the lives of all six occupants, casting a long and dark shadow over the community.

Following the accident, Hao immediately surrendered to the police. Authorities confirmed that he was neither under the influence of alcohol nor drugs during the incident, shifting focus solely on his misjudgment in handling the vehicle. In the courtroom, Hao recounted his desperate attempts to control the truck. He admitted that when he realised the vehicle was accelerating uncontrollably, he tried to shift gears and apply the brakes, but his efforts were in vain. Despite his attempt to steer the vehicle toward the mountainside to avoid the house, he was unable to avert the catastrophe.

"I was terrified by seeing so many people crushed under the wheels," Hao lamented in court, visibly shaken and expressing profound regret for his actions. The emotional turmoil was evident as he described the nightmarish scene that unfolded before him.

In a gesture of accountability and remorse, Hao and his family offered financial compensation to the victims' families, paying out VND1.5 billion (approximately US$57,400). The gesture, although significant, could not erase the grief and loss experienced by the bereaved families.

Va Ba Do, the homeowner impacted by this tragedy, addressed the court with remarkable compassion. Acknowledging his irreplaceable loss, Do nonetheless appealed for leniency in Hao's sentencing. He cited Hao's genuine remorse and the efforts made toward restitution as reasons for his request.

This devastating incident underscores the critical importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise utmost caution, especially in challenging terrains. It also highlights the capacity for forgiveness and empathy amidst profound loss, as demonstrated by Do's plea for mercy for the man responsible for his family's tragedy. The case remains a poignant reminder of the far-reaching impacts of road accidents on individuals and communities alike.

Which puts the question out of how many are hired to drive trucks here without a commercial license or experience. Or if they have one, how did they pass the test? Going downhill in neutral? Engine braking is what truck drivers are supposed to know. So many accidents in trucks and buses here from "brake failure", when it's more likely complete incompetence and drivers hired without any skills but who know someone. Another reason I don't like being on the roads here.
