In the heart of Nong Bua Lamphu, an 80-year-old man has surrendered to police after a tragic family altercation led to the death of his grandson. The incident took place in the Khao Kloi sub-district, where Poon, the grandfather, confessed to shooting 30-year-old Mongkhon during a heated encounter in a paddy field.

Mongkhon, who police report had a history of drug issues, arrived at the field under the influence, displaying aggressive behaviour. As details emerged, it was revealed that Mongkhon, clad only in white shorts, carried a knife and threatened Poon, escalating the situation to a dangerous level. Poon stated he was spraying fertiliser when the encounter turned violent, prompting him to defend himself.

During the altercation, Poon initially fired warning shots, hoping to deter his grandson. When Mongkhon persisted with knife in hand, Poon, overwhelmed and fearful, shot at Mongkhon's leg. However, as Mongkhon continued his advance, Poon fired two more shots, tragically ending his grandson's life.

With tears, Poon recounted the history of threats from Mongkhon, shared by local villagers who arrived at the station to support him. Many in the community had experienced Mongkhon's erratic and menacing behaviour, painting a picture of an ongoing struggle within the family and the broader community.

Police are still deliberating on possible charges as the legal process unfolds, weighing the circumstances against the evidence presented. The small, rural community now grapples with the aftermath of the incident, highlighting the broader issues of substance addiction and family strife.

This tragic event lays bare the complex layers of family dynamics under duress, pushing the community and authorities to consider deeper interventions for families dealing with similar crises.

it's cut and dried self defense. If it's a legal gun, no charges should be filed. Losing a grandson this way is hard enough on an 80 year old man.

Heartbreaking that it came to something like that.

The first shot in the leg was self defence.

The second two fatal shots I doubt it.

Why was out in the rice field with a gun?

When I lived in the UK, I always carried a shotgun when out on my farm, (need to shoot vermin etc, such as this grandson)
