Crime Suspected Thief Electrocuted While Attempting to Steal Power Cables in Bang Lamung

Police are investigating the discovery of a human skeleton beneath a high-voltage electricity pole in Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province, amid suspicions that the deceased was electrocuted while attempting to steal copper wiring.

 

At around 18:00 on 26 June, Pol. Lt. Wattanakit Yodart, an investigator at Bang Lamung Police Station, received a report of human remains found within the perimeter wall of the Huai Khun Chit Reservoir, operated by the Royal Irrigation Department in Takhian Tia subdistrict. Officers from the Forensic Police Division 2, Bang Lamung Hospital, and rescue workers from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation in Pattaya were dispatched to the scene.

 

Authorities located the remains beneath a high-voltage utility pole surrounded by dense foliage inside the reservoir compound. The body, reduced to skeletal remains, was believed to have been dead for several months. The skeleton was found face down, dressed in a green long-sleeve jacket, jeans, and black trainers. A gold-coloured wristwatch was still on the wrist. The clothing appeared to have burn marks, suggesting electrocution.

 

Near the body, police found a packet of rolling tobacco, a lighter, wire cutters, a grass-cutting sickle and a black baseball cap. No identification documents were recovered. Investigators also discovered that high-voltage cables had been cut in the vicinity. Debris from electrical components such as a transformer fuse drop-out unit was scattered on the ground.

 

Mrs. Chanisa Bamrungsak, 60, a local resident living within the reservoir’s grounds, told reporters she had no idea a body was there despite riding her motorcycle past the spot daily. She recalled that the pole once carried a transformer that supplied electricity to the reservoir but said it had been stolen two to three years ago. Since then, the facility has relied on solar power.

 

She admitted noticing a foul smell around a month earlier but assumed it was a dead dog. She only realised something was amiss when a local villager collecting wild vegetables alerted others to the discovery of skeletal remains at the base of the utility pole.

 

Pol. Lt. Wattanakit said that while the exact cause of death had yet to be confirmed, the condition of the body and the presence of cutting tools strongly suggested that the deceased was attempting to steal live electrical cables. It is believed the individual was electrocuted and fell to the ground, where the body remained unnoticed until decomposition, animals and insects reduced it to a skeleton.

 

The remains have been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for an autopsy and DNA testing to establish the deceased’s identity.
