Accident Sergeant Kills Elderly Couple in Crash While Driving Home to Visit Parents in Nakhon Phanom

A crash occurred on the morning of 27 June, when a 36-year-old army sergeant, driving home to visit his parents, allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and crashed his car into a motorcycle with a sidecar, killing an elderly couple instantly.

 

At approximately 06:45, Pol. Sub-Lt. Suphot Ladbasri of Nong Bo Police Station was alerted to a fatal collision on the inbound lane of the Na Kae–Sakon Nakhon highway, near Ban Khok Sri Thong, Kan Lueang Subdistrict, Na Kae District, Nakhon Phanom Province.

 

Responding officers, along with medics from Na Kae Hospital and local rescue teams, found a Toyota Vios sedan had collided with a Honda Wave motorcycle with an attached sidecar. The force of the impact drove both vehicles into the central reservation, leaving them damaged.

 

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as Mr. Sut aged 68 and his wife Mrs. Dee also aged 68, both of whom were travelling on the motorcycle sidecar. Their bodies were found a short distance from the wreckage, having been thrown from the vehicle.

 

The driver of the car, identified as Army Sergeant Amorntep age 36, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

 

Initial reports suggest that the sergeant was driving back from Bangkok to his hometown in Na Kae District to visit his parents. He was reportedly just five kilometres from his destination when he allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off course and slam into the couple’s motorcycle.

 

Police have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash and confirm whether fatigue was the primary factor. Legal proceedings will follow accordingly.

He was driving on the wrong side of a major divided road. "Fell asleep behind the wheel"?

Falling asleep in the mornings, brake failure, driving into waterways, all happening here so many times.  Excuses instead of admitting texting while driving  seems more likely.
