Crime Three Political Canvassers Accused of Assaulting Man Hand Themselves In

Three political canvassers for MP Chonnapat Naksua of Thailand’s Kla Tham Party have turned themselves in after being accused of brutally assaulting a 65-year-old former civil servant in the Rawo Subdistrict of Ranot District, Songkhla province.

 

The suspects, identified as Mr. Phanuwat 48, Mr. Sangkom 46 and Mr. Sanchai 35, were accompanied by their lawyer, Mr. Suriya Pheriphat, as they voluntarily reported to Ranot Police Station at 17:00 on 17 July.

 

The incident allegedly took place in the early hours of 11 July, when the victim was reportedly abducted and violently attacked. The lawyer stated that the accused presented themselves to affirm their innocence after media reports linked them to the assault.

 

Ranot police have charged the three men with jointly causing grievous bodily harm and illegal detention. However, all three denied involvement in the attack during questioning.

 

Despite the suspects’ denials, Songkhla MP Chonnapat Naksua confirmed that the men were indeed part of his political support team but claimed that the incident involved only a “scuffle” and not a serious assault. The victim, however, reportedly sustained serious injuries.

 

Investigators from Ranot Police Station and Songkhla Provincial Police have been working together to collect CCTV footage from the village and surrounding roads, particularly along the Songkhla–Nakhon Si Thammarat route, to gather additional evidence and determine whether other individuals were involved.

 

Ranot Police Superintendent Pol. Col. Thanya Sangsinchai stated that the assault case is not the only incident under investigation. Police are also pursuing leads in a related case in which unknown individuals allegedly threw rocks and fired projectiles at residents’ homes, events believed to be linked to the initial assault.

 

Police say efforts are ongoing to bring all those responsible to justice and to prevent further violence in the area.
