A ten-wheeled lorry ploughed into the rear of a stationary army bus on Route 401 in Sichon District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, leaving one person dead and 19 injured.

The incident occurred in Moo 13, Thung Prang sub-district, near the village of Ban Thanon Phat. According to police reports, the lorry, which was carrying two people, veered off course and crashed into the back of a parked bus belonging to the Sichon Special Forces Training Camp. The army vehicle was carrying 22 personnel who had been returning from a volunteer activity in the local area.

Pol. Col. Bunchoen Lhamprajowpong, superintendent of Sichon Police Station, confirmed that 19 soldiers sustained injuries and were immediately taken to Sichon Hospital for treatment. Three other military personnel were unharmed.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene on foot, abandoning the wrecked vehicle. His passenger, who sustained critical injuries and was trapped inside the lorry’s cabin, was rescued by emergency workers but later succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

Major Somsak Klapwila, commander of the Sichon training unit, said the army bus had parked briefly by the roadside when the lorry driver, allegedly speeding and swerving erratically, struck it from behind. Eyewitnesses at the scene stated the lorry appeared to be moving in a zigzag pattern before the crash, raising suspicions that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Police are currently investigating the crash and are pursuing legal action against the fleeing driver.
