So I've been thinking about the situation of western expats both in Thailand and Cambodia especially if this drags on and on and gets much worse.

I presume that Cambodia imports a lot of things from Thailand, so if this goes on, and imports fall, will typical Thai food items disappear from shelves in Cambodia?

Guess, in Thailand not much will change, as even the baht is not impacted.

So its not a good idea to wear a T-Shirt with a Cambo Emblem on it.

I won't be banging out Dengue Fever tracks in my car for a few months.

Actually, I left it out as it is irrelevant (IMO), due to the fact that you can never be sure that you aren't going to offend someone.  Even in a "localised discussion", talking with close Thai friends who you feel you know and trust, topics of this nature can completely transform people.  It's just the way people are in countries such as Thailand.

I thought you would know that, and the fact that you apparently don't prompted my comment.  No obtuseness or intellectual dishonesty here.  (Not my style.)

Fair enough....    I've actually had in depth discussions on the topic with Thai's...  Wife, her Parents and friends...

... All of them educated and trusted...

There are also friends who I might be somewhat overly nationalistic and may get upset when discussing such topics, but I can see that in them and can easily avoid the subjects.

I have found that when discussing even the most controversial of topics with most educated Thai's the conversation can be held...  so long as the delivery remains respectful, just as with any topic really....

Many Thai's do not know about certain aspects of this conflict...  I have also learned from a lot of Thai's on this subject too...

Also what we hear internationally is different from what we are reading and hearing locally - this the bias and propaganda comes into it, also along with sanitisation of the information for international viewing perhaps...

I wouldn't be discussing such a matter with Taxi drivers etc - but 'most' trusted friends sure...

Is there really much exposure to "foreign residents" in the conflict zone? Perhaps a handful of them. Obviously, unfortunate, and  unwanted, but this conflict won't impact  the foreign resident community as long as its stays on the border. It's not as if Cambodia will be bombing  Pattaya.  Maybe the southern insurgents will use this as an opportunity to be more active.

Can you say more about your library?

I am more interested in this, compared to my interest in warfare.

Can you say more about this?

Any first editions, by the way?

And, how do they hold up in this climate?

Terrible climate for preserving good books, might I add.

Bindings take a pounding in this humidity, not to mention, possibly, a rocket attack.

Haven't had a problem from climate. The library has the a/c on most of every day as I sit at my desk. The overflow in the main u/s bedroom has the a/c on all night. The overflow in the main bedroom d/s is the exception - no a/c except on the rare occasion when we have visitors staying (the current family overflow are sleeping on the floor of the living room) - but hasn't been a problem.

The main thing I guard against is sunlight falling on the books. And of course these days in my old age and living here a million miles from civilisation all my book purchases now are ebooks. You can check out my collection on librarything.com/catalog/mfd101

I did check it out.

I did not find Victor Hugo.

But, having a library is a glorious thingy....

5 Victor Hugos in print books (3 in French), plus Graham Robb's 'VH', plus The Delphi & Arvensa complete works in ebks. Delphi are of course indispensable for any bibliophile, and Arvensa for the French equivalent - even higher quality - when available.

Extremely admirable.

Unfortunately, one cannot be both a rolling stone, and still maintain an admirable library of physical copies of books.

One might dream of having a great personal library of books.

But then, how to carry the books on one's back, as one travels through life.

Anyway, send me a link to your digitized copies, and I will have a look.

Years ago, maybe 20 years ago around 2004, we thought that we might be able to see actual copies of all books on Google Books....

I am so old that I recall seeing these books, on line, at that time.

But then, what happened?

I think I can recall the day, as if it were yesterday, that the beautifully scanned books were no longer free for us to view.

Anyway, this copyright thing got in the way of a very good thing...and so.....this was a TERRIBLE DAY for the world......

It was like.....

Send me copies of your books before they are all burned to ash, please....

I will stay out of it in public, but on this forum I will support Thailand and hope they kick Cambodia’s sorry butt. And do it quickly and decisively.

Should we also avoid opinion?... No, IMO of course not - just like anyone else we (foreigners here) can of course have opinions, but as with anything we should be careful where we voice those opinions - i.e. we should keep our opinions private, but in localised discussion, why not voice our opinion?, especially if we are aware of the history, the politics and familiar with the Hun Sen - Taksin games that have gone on.

It's taboo for foreigners to do or say anything constructive.

I repaired my kitchen faucet yesterday and the eyes have walls...

Just go to my LT site as before & type in 'Delphi' on the search button. I have 415 of them. Wonderful and thousands of pages in many cases for US3 or 4.

And you should search on delphiclassics.com to check out individual ones ...
