Amid growing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI) is taking decisive steps to ensure both military support and smooth commercial flight operations. Acting director Surachai Nuprom stated that AEROTHAI is prepared and vigilant, following Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit’s orders to closely observe and report on the evolving situation.

AEROTHAI issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) on 25th July, highlighting changes due to the unrest, specifically declaring certain airspace as danger zones. Despite these adjustments, they have successfully rerouted air traffic to minimise impact, ensuring domestic and international flights avoid these hazardous areas without affecting their schedules.

Commercial flights over Thai airspace continue as normal, with only specific services between Bangkok and Phnom Penh experiencing alterations. Thai Airways, for instance, cancelled flights TG584 and TG585 from 27th to 31st July, opting to consolidate passengers onto larger aircraft. Other scheduled services, such as TG586/587, remain unaffected.

To address potential emergencies, AEROTHAI has collaborated with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand and the Royal Thai Air Force, setting up a coordination group. This proactive approach aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines, ensuring readiness for any developments that might affect international civil aviation.

Beyond commercial endeavours, AEROTHAI remains steadfast in its commitment to national security by supporting military operations. The organisation has bolstered its workforce to manage the situation effectively and is in continuous dialogue with national security agencies. This ensures they are poised to adapt to any scenario promptly, reflecting government policies.

Overall, AEROTHAI’s strategic adjustments highlight its dedication to maintaining both air safety and operational efficiency amidst uncertain circumstances, adopting a balanced approach that caters equally to civilian and military needs.
