A shocking case of domestic violence has rocked a quiet community in Nakhon Si Thammarat, ending in death when the alleged perpetrator was found dead in police custody.

Police in Nopphitam District confirmed that Mr. Sombun Chaowalit, 56, died by suicide in his holding cell on the morning of August 3, just hours after being arrested for shooting his wife and daughter.

The incident occurred on August 2 at the family’s home in a palm oil plantation in Moo 7, Kahro subdistrict. Mr. Sombun, reportedly intoxicated and in a frenzied state, used a .22 calibre firearm to shoot his wife, Mrs. Supanee 50, and their daughter, Ms. Patcharin 30. Both suffered serious gunshot wounds to the torso, arm and face.

The two victims were rushed to Tha Sala Hospital. Doctors have confirmed that Mrs. Supanee is now in a stable condition, while her daughter remains in intensive care under close medical supervision.

Police from Nopphitam Police Station arrested Mr. Sombun shortly after the shooting. During overnight interrogation, he was reportedly disoriented and confused and it took over three hours for investigators to obtain a full statement. He was subsequently placed in a holding cell.

At approximately 10:40 on August 3, Police Sub-Lieutenant Niyom Urajon, the duty investigator, discovered that Mr. Sombun had hanged himself inside the cell. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Mr. Sombun had inquired about the condition of his wife and daughter prior to his detention. Upon learning of their severe injuries, it is believed that he became overwhelmed with guilt and took his own life.

Police have confirmed that the criminal investigation will proceed, with evidence being collected to ensure proper legal closure for the victims and their family.
