Politics Marijuana Claims Spur Senate to Review Drug Policy

The Philippine Senate is set to strengthen its random drug testing policies following reports of alleged marijuana use within its premises. Senate President Francis Escudero announced the initiative in response to recent allegations, highlighting the need for stricter implementation.

 

In a letter addressed to Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III, Escudero detailed the steps being taken to improve the Senate's drug testing procedures. The most recent mandatory random drug test (MRDT) for officials and employees occurred on 20th March, and preparations are underway for the next round.

 

Escudero emphasised the importance of the initiative and assured that future testing would adhere to the guidelines set forth in the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. To ensure comprehensive and legally sound procedures, the Senate is working closely with the Department of Health and accredited laboratories to update these guidelines.

 

The renewed focus on drug testing follows Senate Policy Order No. 2018-002, which was implemented during Sotto’s tenure as Senate President. This policy institutionalised random drug testing, though its enforcement reportedly tapered off after 2020. Escudero highlighted the necessity of revisiting these policies for stricter enforcement, especially amid current concerns.

 

"At present, we are awaiting the complete roster of Senate employees whose names will be included in the next MRDT," Escudero noted, signalling that preparations are advancing.

 

Sotto had previously called for immediate testing in light of the allegations concerning drug use on the Senate's fifth floor. His push for timely testing acts as a catalyst for the Senate's updated measures.

 

This development underscores the Senate's commitment to maintaining a drug-free environment and ensuring the integrity of its operations. By tightening drug testing policies, the Senate aims to dispel any doubts about the conduct of its members and staff.
