German prosecutors revealed this dramatic twist on Thursday, asserting that Serhii K. was a coordinator in the plot, where explosive devices were allegedly placed on the critical pipelines. The saga dates back to September 2022 when a series of explosions rocked the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, mere months after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It sparked a flurry of accusations, with Western powers initially pointing fingers at Russia, while Russia countered these claims. German investigations, however, have since pointed to a Ukrainian cell featuring five men and one woman. These individuals supposedly chartered the yacht "Andromeda" from Rostock to execute the explosive mission aimed at crippling the lucrative energy route for Russia. In a pre-dawn swoop, Serhii K. was arrested in the Italian province of Rimini, following a European arrest warrant. The accused, together with accomplices, allegedly used forged documents to hire the yacht for their clandestine operation. German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig lauded the intricate investigation that led to the arrest. The Nord Stream pipelines have long stirred political controversy, considered a mechanism allowing Russian gas to bypass Eastern Europe, heightening Germany’s reliance on Moscow's energy. Despite that, the geopolitical landscape shifted drastically with the outbreak of war, leading to Western sanctions and a gas switch-off by Moscow. September brought underwater tremors, with seismic institutes reporting blasts and revealing four leaks near the Danish island of Bornholm. Notably, two leaks fell within Denmark's economic territory and two within Sweden’s. Previously, German authorities sought Volodymyr Z., who is another Ukrainian suspect and is alleged to be one of the divers involved in the sabotage. His background as a diving instructor residing in Poland, along with his connection to a diving school couple, paints a complex network behind the attack. This case underscores tension for Germany and Ukraine, given Germany's staunch support of Kyiv against Russian aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has distanced his government from any such attack plans, reported the Bangkok Post. Reports have surfaced of discussions between Washington and Moscow about reviving Nord Stream 2, potentially managed by an American firm, as part of peace talks. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, shortly after assuming office, pledged to prevent Nord Stream 2 from reactivation. With arrest warrants and international intrigue, the Nord Stream case remains a politically loaded affair with ripples bound to affect diplomatic relations.
