Two Thai nationals working as chefs in Malaysia were killed in a devastating house fire, with efforts now underway to repatriate their bodies to their home provinces in southern Thailand.

The blaze broke out around 11:00 on 27 August at a rented townhouse in Lorong Mangkis, Johor Bahru–Pontian Road, Malaysia, where seven Thai migrant workers were living.

Superintendent Mohamad Shofi Taib, head of police in the Pontian district, confirmed that the victims were identified as Mr. Nasri E-Sa, 31 and Mr. Masabuding Sa-Laeh, 27. Both men died at the scene.

Three others were injured, two with minor injuries and one reported to be in serious condition and were taken to Pontian Hospital for treatment.

Fire crews from the Pontian Baru and Pekan Nanas stations managed to bring the blaze under control, though the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have categorised the deaths as “sudden death” cases, pending results from post-mortem examinations.

The victims’ employer, Ms. Nura Hazlina Mohd Hanafiah, 46, said she would ensure their bodies are sent back to Thailand.

“Mr. Nasri E-Sa was married with three children. His body will be returned to Narathiwat province. Mr. Masabuding Sa-Laeh, who was single, will be sent back to Pattani,” she said.
