Police Region 6 investigators, working with Mae Sot police, have arrested three Thai men for attempting to smuggle 29 Myanmar nationals into Thailand using pickup trucks.

On 28 August, Pol Lt Gen Kittisak Durongkhiboon, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 6, together with senior commanders Pol Maj Gen Raweepat Amornmuneepong, acting chief of Tak Provincial Police, and Pol Maj Gen Detphon Premsiri, head of Region 6 Investigation Division, ordered the operation.

Led by Pol Col Pongpan Aomsin, Pol Col Worachet Polkhan, and Pol Col Rang Daodung, officers intercepted three pickup trucks near Tha Pong on the banks of the Moei River, in Ban Mae Konken, Mae Sot district, Tak province.

Inside the vehicles, police discovered 29 undocumented Myanmar migrants, 23 men and 6 women. The drivers, all Thai nationals, were immediately detained.

According to investigators, the arrests followed intelligence reports of illegal migrant transport along the Moei River route. Surveillance was set up and when the convoy of three pickups appeared, officers moved in.

During questioning, the suspects admitted they had been paid to transport the migrants to Phop Phra district, where another group was due to collect them and move them further inland.

The three drivers face charges of harbouring and assisting illegal migrants to evade arrest, while the migrants themselves are being prosecuted for entering the kingdom without permission. All parties were transferred to Mae Sot Police Station for legal proceedings.
