Bangkok Airways has announced plans to expand the runway at Trat Airport to accommodate larger aircraft, in a move expected to further boost tourism in the eastern province.

Senior Marketing and Communications Director Darunee Thepwun told reporters that the airline first invested in Trat Airport over a decade ago, recognising the province’s potential as a prime tourist destination. The area is famed for its natural attractions, including Koh Chang and Koh Kood, as well as its vibrant local communities.

Each year, tens of thousands of tourists, particularly from Europe, visit Trat through Bangkok Airways, experiencing both the region’s natural beauty and its cultural offerings. The expansion of the runway will allow bigger planes to land, improving access for travellers and supporting the growth of local tourism.

“Tourism operators and local communities will have greater opportunities to welcome both domestic and international visitors,” said Ms Thepwun. “Our airline also contributes to social and community initiatives in Trat, such as promoting low-season tourism through events like the recent half-marathon, helping local communities turn seashells into souvenirs, and supporting sustainable environmental practices.”

Trat Provincial Treasury Office reports that passenger numbers through Trat Airport reached 75,984 in 2024, with 36,649 passengers in the first half of 2025. Tourist arrivals in the province numbered 2,267,612 in 2024 and 1,099,805 in the first six months of 2025.

On 1 September 2025, Bangkok Airways CEO Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth will host a media briefing in Trat to outline further plans to enhance airport capacity and support the province’s tourism growth.

The runway expansion is expected to improve convenience for tourists and residents alike, while continuing to promote sustainable tourism and economic development in Trat.
