A Scottish holidaymaker from Dundee is recovering in hospital after being shot during a road rage incident in Mae Hong Son.

The tourist, whose name has not been released, was allegedly gunned down by a local man following a confrontation outside the Yoma Hotel in Mae Hong Son province on the evening of 26 August.

Police said the row erupted after the tourist almost collided with the suspect’s vehicle. The driver, identified as Kitinan Pantarak, 40, an alleged cannabis dealer, who accused of pulling out a firearm and opening fire, striking the Scot in the arm.

In a bizarre twist, the gunman is reported to have then helped the injured man into his vehicle and driven him to Pai Hospital, where doctors treated him. However, Kitinan fled the hospital before officers arrived.

Police later tracked the suspect down and arrested him at his home. He has since been remanded in custody.

Colonel Phasawin Kaewtai of Mae Hong Son police confirmed:

“We received a report that a British man had been shot with a firearm and was injured. Officers and investigators went to the scene and found that the victim had already been taken to Pai Hospital. He sustained an injury to his arm. He was staying at a rented room, not as a guest at the Yoma Hotel.”

Security camera footage is said to show the confrontation between the two men. Police also revealed that the suspect claimed to have initially met the tourist around three weeks earlier.

The Scottish victim is now out of danger. However, authorities confirmed they are also investigating him after discovering he had overstayed his permission of stay.

'but are probing the tourist as he was overstaying in the country.'

Nothing like a good probing 🤭

Yeah...investigate throughly on the tourist who got shot for his overstay and forget about the criminal who shot him as he is a Thai.

The Thai who shot him has been arrested .

Thats hardly forgetting about him, now is it .

The Scots guy wasn't a tourist, so the report was being sympathetic to his plight .

Could be that the Scots guy deliberately tried to run down the drug dealer ?

In other news " Local Thai man praised by the public in the apprehending of fugitive foreigner on overstay".

Traffic near miss, or drug deal gone bad?

Spot on.

The perp has been locked up, as clearly stated in the article.

But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of a little gratuitous Thai-bashing.

Yeah, it probably is same serious as usual. Drug dealer shot him. They meet a couple of weeks earlier. Drug payments or business that gone wrong??? So, yeah he can be a criminal too.

I don't find this aspect of the incident the least bit strange. Most Thais are very decent people with explosive tempers. The trigger man probably came to his senses and felt remorse for his actions.  The judge might look favourably on the act of taking the victim to the hospital and reduce the sentence.

More likely that he wanted to avoid a murder charge and 20 years in jail

The constant denigration of Thais by some farangs is nothing new.

Why do these snarky misfits remain in Thailand?

Are they being held here against their will?

If not, they should do everybody a favor and bag out.

Reminds me of when a neighbour in Australia reported being burgled and whilst the police were at his house they found he was growing a couple of cannabis plants, so he was charged with that offence. Of course his property was never recovered and doubtful the burglary was ever investigated.

Would it be any difference in any other countries ?

They also had a an incident few weeks earlier maybe leading up to this incident?

If you haven’t noticed yet, overstay is a serious matter most places in the world with borders 😉

Good point.

If "tourists" become as numerous and obnoxious in Thailand as they are in some holiday destinations in Europe, it will only be a matter of time before a Trump-like strongman arises to flush out the Augean Stables.

Many parts of the country have degenerated into pig pens already... Sleaze-by-the-Sea is Exhibit A.

When a demographic can't control its own, then others will step in to do it.

UPDATE
Scottish Tourist Recovering After Road Rage Shooting

A Scottish national who was shot during a road rage incident in northern Thailand is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery.

Aiden McDonald, 25, from Dundee, was struck in the arm by a bullet following a confrontation with a local man in Mae Hong Son.

The incident unfolded after McDonald, who was riding a motorbike, was involved in a near collision with 40-year-old Kitinan Pantarak outside a hotel. Eyewitnesses said an argument broke out in the street before Pantaarak allegedly pulled out a handgun and opened fire.

Thai police later arrested Pantarak at his home. He faces charges of attempted murder and firearms offences. Local reports claim he is known to police as a suspected cannabis dealer.

McDonald had been living in Thailand for over a year, regularly sharing photos of his life abroad on social media. Just months ago, he posted pictures of beaches, mountain sunsets and time spent with friends, captioning one shot: “Another day in paradise.”

Family members back in Scotland have been informed and are said to be relieved that his injuries are not life-threatening.

A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson confirmed:

“We are supporting a British national who has been hospitalised in Thailand and are in contact with local authorities.”

Police investigations are ongoing and McDonald is expected to remain in hospital for several more days while he recovers.

Never mind gunning down people, overstay, even by just one day, is the real crime in Thailand... 😆

Maybe either, or both, but of one thing we can be certain - a crime was committed against fashion.

The best thing that you can do here when out in public is to be as humble and respectful as possible, even when somebody does something stupid on the road. That's no reason to react and act out, here that can cost your life. You just take a deep breath, you count to five, and you just say okay I moved here because I wanted to be some someplace that was less predictable, if I wanted predictable I would have stayed in the US. I'm here because I like the fact that the place is different, the people are different, the culture is different, and I understand the fact that Thailand is not a foreign country, Thailand is a distant planet.

Things happen to me everyday here that I don't understand, I've learned to take a deep breath laugh it off and move on.

Usual suspect. Pai is filled with those fake Rasta Thai's from the south and they've always been known to be violent. Absolute scum and a blight if you ask me.

Kitinan Pantarak, the armed guy who shot the Scottish man should be charged by the Fashion Police on top of other charges for visual pollution.  Trying to look like “gangsta man”

Nothing less than 500B I hope

Scary...hit the arm...slight twitch pulling the trigger....hit in the chest....murder

(oh wait....LL might be reading, unintentional homicide?)

We are talking about an armed drug dealer that has the state of mind to pull a gun and shoot someone!

A picture often tells a story!!
