August 29, 2025Aug 29 Bought close to 1kg from Foo*Land and it's a grizzly loaded chewy mess. So nice place for good quality biff stew meat in Pattaya ? Makro ?
August 29, 2025Aug 29 Yes hard to find good beef that is not at an exorbitant price. Macro has some from Australia and New Zealand but still expensive. There was a post on here the other day about a foreigner and his Thai wife producing a Wagyu /Thai brahmin hybrid somewhere out in the boonies they didn't mention price in the bit of video I watched. ahh found it

I'm eating less beef than I was back home, but will not cut it out completely. I suppose you could remain healthy enough on chicken and/or pork though ...
August 29, 2025Aug 29 Check out the large open markets. There's normally Muslim shops selling Beef. If it's only for stews it's good stuff. Slow cooker or Pressure cooker.
August 29, 2025Aug 29 I eat a fair amount of beef, but Harvey (AU import) and buy from Makro. 7-8-900 / kg, or something like that, and far from expensive. Whole tenderloins, sirloin & picanha pieces, to slice down to what every you want. Have chuck & rump for stewing, if patient and should be good.

Good that you can enjoy it but Harvey beef is Brahman cross grown in the north of Oz. Not the best depending how you cook it.

Best low cost I've found in TH, so it works for me. Most people do screw beef up when cooking, and usually not the fault of the meat, good or poor quality. More than enough experience, most is quite tasty, as long as I'm paying attention, and don't screw it up At the price point, I don't expect it to be the best. Though Brahman is a decent breed, and used to cross with Angus quite a bit, and will do if couldn't find or spend a bit extra for Black Angus, when living in USA. I read prices for decent aged Black Angus is a bit silly now, back in USA. I'm not going to pay more that 1000 THB for beef in TH. Or fall for the Wagyu pricing scam. I probably eat equal amounts of beef, pork, chicken & seafood (Salmon & Shrimp). Dining out, it's usually pork & chicken, as more forgiving and less chance of screwing it up.

August 30, 2025Aug 30 Makro is really the ONLY place left that I know of to buy beef anymore in Pattaya....Sure the prices may not be dirt cheap at Makro but the prices there are Waaaaaay better than any where else...I guess Friendship would be my second choice but their beef cuts are nothing to write home about thats for sure...
August 30, 2025Aug 30 There was a piece on the news last night about ARO (Makro) Angus beef that is sourced in Thailand maybe worth looking at ? hopefully cheaper than the imported stuff.

As others have said I prefer Macro because there is more choice and less likelihood of bad cuts of meat, then it is just down to cost, even then you can still get tough beef joints that need slower cooking.
August 30, 2025Aug 30 Popular Post Thai beef is OK for stews because as a ingredient in stews, it's cooked on low heat for several hours. Most of the cartilage (gristle, not grizzle ) melts, which adds flavor to the broth, and the meat becomes tender. Even in the West, people use cheap cuts of tough beef for stews. My mother believed firmly that tough beef was best for stews because it had more flavor. Thai beef is deficient when it comes to roasts or steaks because it lacks tenderness, but that doesn't matter for stews. Using tender beef in stews is just a waste of money.
August 30, 2025Aug 30 One could conceivably cut the gristle out.... Trim the meat, use the nice part for the stew, and then boil and puree the trimmings/gristle and use it for the broth. I think gristle is actually pretty heathy.

Their brisket is around 340 baht per kilo from Australia, but sometimes they have "local" brisket that is cheaper. I brown it and cook in the pressure cooker on high for 19 minutes and do a natural release. It's good. I also get a 1 kilo beef leg bone from them for 55 baht make a stock.

Slow cooker over night works for me, put the vegatables in in the morning and Thai Beef is good if you supervise them when they cut it. I like fat in my beef, gristle is okay if using a slow cooker, it will disappear, or be so soft you can eat it without chewing. Agree on the Wagyu, very overpriced and seems to be the Fad of the Day in US, even have a place that sells Wagyu Burgers if you can believe that (I don’t)

I like a good strip.

Wagyu labeling is such a scam, and mind boggling people fall for it. Also not a ribeye fan, as really is hit & miss buying large pieces. Know it taste better, but just hate the added fat and gristle that comes with it. Tenderloin, Sirloin / strip, Picanha are better choices for me. Especially since buying large pieces, as like cutting out 1.5" - 2" steaks. Though on topic, anything will do for a stew.

I mostly buy Tenderloin and Entrecote for around 280 baht a kilo! Thats a steal compared to where I am coming from, Norway, where the same meat goes for 2000 baht and more a kilo!! That Thai meat is good. I eat "tons" of it!!😂
