Cambodian police have arrested 47 individuals—including 35 Chinese nationals—following a violent shootout at a restaurant in Sihanoukville on the night of 11 September. The incident, which unfolded in the busy O’Chheuteal area, has raised fresh concerns over foreign criminal activity in the coastal city.

According to the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Police Commissariat, the gunfire erupted around 10 p.m. and involved two rival groups of Chinese nationals. Officers responding to the scene initially detained 14 suspects and seized a handgun. Further investigations led to the arrest of 33 more individuals, including four Nepalese and eight Cambodians.

Authorities confiscated 13 firearms—among them AK-47 rifles and handguns—along with ammunition, five vehicles, and a quantity of white powder suspected to be narcotics. The suspects remain in custody pending interrogation and legal proceedings.

The shootout occurred near a luxury hotel in Buon commune and was reportedly triggered by a dispute between the groups. Police have yet to confirm the motive, though early reports suggest a business-related conflict may be at the root of the confrontation.

Local observers say the incident reflects growing unease over the presence of armed foreign groups in Sihanoukville, a city that has seen rapid development and an influx of Chinese investment in recent years. Social commentator Yong Kim Eng noted that while most foreign visitors are law-abiding, unchecked criminal networks pose a serious threat to public safety and Cambodia’s tourism reputation.

The case is being prepared for submission to the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court. Officials have pledged to enforce strict legal measures and improve coordination with foreign governments to prevent similar incidents.

As Cambodia continues to attract international business and tourism, the government faces mounting pressure to balance economic openness with robust law enforcement—particularly in hotspots like Sihanoukville, where tensions can quickly escalate.

There were some news reports a few years back which stated that Chinese gangs essentially controlled Sihanoukville.

Thailand should take note.

They have taken over the famous RCA entertainment strip in Bangkok - that's pretty clear.

Should do wonders for tourism ...

the gangs mostly just shoot at each other, right?

drugs + casinos = bad news

It's far too late for Cambodia they were hoodwinked into opening the county up to Chinese casinos and their gamblers and associated criminals.

Most farang tourists have long abandoned Sihanoukville.

Hells Bells, that's a sizable shootout.
