Cracker Barrel Halts Restaurant Renovations After Logo Backlash

Cracker Barrel has suspended planned restaurant renovations after a logo redesign sparked a wave of customer outrage and a stock slump. The chain announced Tuesday that it will no longer move forward with remodeling projects, following criticism over its shift to a minimalist design.

The controversial changes—tested in just four of the company’s 660 locations—removed the brand’s trademark dark wood interiors and Americana décor. Cracker Barrel quickly reversed course, promising customers that its classic features, including porch rocking chairs, fireplaces, peg games, antiques, and gift shop treasures, would remain.

The backlash began after Cracker Barrel replaced its longtime “Old Timer” logo, eliminating both the iconic figure and the barrel itself. The simplified version was slammed online as “woke,” particularly by conservative voices and far-right influencers, sending the company’s shares down as much as 12%. In response, Cracker Barrel reinstated the original logo.

Despite the remodeling halt, the company said its $700 million transformation plan—including menu updates and new food offerings—is still underway. Shares of Cracker Barrel (CBRL) were flat Tuesday afternoon.

Former President Donald Trump even weighed in on the reversal, posting on Truth Social: “All of your fans very much appreciate it. Good luck into the future. Make lots of money and, most importantly, make your customers happy again!”

Key Takeaways:

  • Cracker Barrel suspended restaurant remodels after a logo redesign flopped.

  • The “Old Timer” logo and Americana-themed décor are staying.

  • Stock dipped 12% after backlash, but shares were flat Tuesday.
