AEON Mall Apologises Over Hanuman Beer Tattoo-for-Beer Row

AEON Mall Sen Sok City has issued a formal apology following public backlash over an unauthorised event hosted by its tenant, Hanuman VIP Lounge, which offered tattoos in exchange for free beer. The event, dubbed “Hanuman Spaceship,” was promoted as a charity T-shirt exchange but quickly drew criticism for its unexpected twist.

In a statement released Thursday, AEON Mall clarified that only a clothing swap had been approved, allowing visitors to trade used garments for new Hanuman-branded shirts. The tattoo-for-beer activity, it stressed, was never proposed or sanctioned by mall management.

“It came as a complete surprise to us,” the statement read, “and we disavow any involvement in the arrangement or hosting of this particular event.” AEON Mall Cambodia Co., Ltd. reiterated its strict policy requiring prior approval for all tenant activities to ensure alignment with company values and social responsibility.

The mall said it acted swiftly upon learning of the breach, instructing the tenant to cease the unauthorised activity. “We sincerely apologise for any concern and inconvenience this incident has caused,” the statement continued, acknowledging a lapse in oversight.

Social media added fuel to the fire. A TikTok video by JADE, reportedly the daughter-in-law of Hanuman Beer’s owner, showcased the event but omitted mention of tattoos or alcohol. Meanwhile, Hanuman Beer’s own Facebook post celebrated the rapid distribution of 1,000 shirts, prompting mixed reactions. One user claimed to have received tattoos in exchange for ten cases of beer, to which Hanuman Beer replied, “These beers are enough to celebrate the Pchum Ben Festival.”

Despite repeated attempts, Hanuman Beer did not respond to media queries. The incident has sparked debate over corporate accountability and event regulation in Cambodia’s growing retail sector.

As AEON Mall pledges tighter oversight, the episode serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of unchecked promotions—and the fine line between creative marketing and reputational fallout.
