Cambodia has taken a major step toward a cleaner energy future with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approving a $52.72 million loan to expand the country’s transmission network and integrate more renewable power into the national grid.

The Grid Expansion Project, announced Thursday, will see 55 kilometres of high-voltage transmission lines built between Pursat and Kampong Chhnang, alongside upgrades to nine substations nationwide. These improvements aim to boost grid capacity, reduce transmission losses, and support Cambodia’s growing reliance on solar and wind energy.

“Reliable and affordable electricity is the backbone of Cambodia’s growth story,” said Jyotsana Varma, ADB’s Country Director for Cambodia. “This project is about connecting people, schools, hospitals, and businesses to a cleaner and more resilient energy future.”

Cambodia’s domestic electricity output has more than doubled in just four years—from 8.68 terawatt hours in 2020 to 17.85 TWh in 2024—while dependence on imported power has halved. The shift signals rising energy self-sufficiency and growing confidence in local renewable sources.

The project aligns with Cambodia’s Power Development Master Plan (2022–2040) and its National Energy Efficiency Policy (2022–2030), both of which prioritise sustainable infrastructure and energy security. Officials hope the upgrades will also attract greater private investment in the sector.

ADB, a key player in regional development, continues to support inclusive and sustainable growth across Asia. Its backing of Cambodia’s energy transition reflects a broader commitment to tackling climate challenges through innovation and partnership.

As the country modernises its grid, the focus is clear: powering progress not just with wires and substations, but with long-term resilience and opportunity.
