Pheu Thai is considering Nuttaphong Kunakornwong, husband of Pintongta Shinawatra Kunakornwong, as a possible prime ministerial candidate, sparking speculation in Thai political circles. Nuttaphong, chief executive of SC Asset Corporation, is being seen as a fresh potential leader by some within the party. His current distance from politics adds intrigue to the possibility of his leadership.

Speculation initially pointed to Pintongta Shinawatra, Thaksin’s eldest daughter, succeeding her younger sister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra. However, senior Pheu Thai member Phumtham Wechayachai indicated she should focus on her business career. Conversations around Nuttaphong’s candidacy suggest the need for discussions with him and his family, as Phumtham noted the importance of their interest and approval.

Nuttaphong has downplayed these rumors, stating during a visit to Klongprem Central Prison, where Thaksin is serving a one-year sentence, that he has not considered the role. This visit included Pintongta, Paetongtarn, and Pidok Sooksawas, and involved a non-contact meeting facilitated by Thaksin's lawyer, Winyat Chartmontree.

Phumtham also mentioned Thaksin’s ex-wife, Khunying Potjaman na Pombejra, attended a meeting at Pheu Thai headquarters to support party members. The Shinawatra family's ongoing challenges persist amid Thaksin’s legal issues, recently highlighted by the Supreme Court's decision to maintain his one-year sentence without reducing it for hospital time.

Despite these trials, Phumtham expressed confidence in Pheu Thai’s political standing. He assured that the party aims to finish among the top two in the upcoming election. As discussions about new leadership candidates continue, the shadow of Thaksin’s legal situation looms large over the party’s future direction.

Looking forward, the decision regarding a new prime ministerial candidate remains under speculation. Any developments could influence Pheu Thai's strategy and position in the next general election, with leadership choices playing a crucial role.

Key Takeaways

  • Pheu Thai considers Nuttaphong Kunakornwong for potential leadership.
  • Discussions around his candidacy involve family considerations.
  • Legal challenges remain a pivotal point in Pheu Thai's strategy.

Does no one else think it strange that Thaksin's real son Panthongtae, or Oak, has never joined the party or been considered for a role? What's up with that?

No, not strange - too stupid.

Thailand needs to reject this toxic entitled family from politics. It makes me sad to say it, but I'd prefer Prayut to the Thaksin nonsense.

Well, it makes Pheu Thai Party's real status pretty obvious ... just another family possession.

I would have thought they would at least pretend that PT is a real political party that stands for a particular set of values and policies to take this great nation forward.

But No. I'm obviously too naive to understand.

They all seem to be in business. Why don't they just do that. Its not compulsory to go into politics if you're in business is it?

It´s fantastic! Seems like everyone connected to this family have the necessary knowledge to lead and run a country. They are truly ridiculous.

Thaksin is determined to follow in the footsteps of Hun Sen of Cambodia  or the North Korean dynasty.

Let's face it Thailand is the only country in SEA that isn't under the control of one party or military government.

Thaksin dreams of being a dictator in one form or another.

Fortunately in Thailand there are still elections. For the time being

Could never happen in the West,

apart from Bush senior and Bush junior!

It is impossible to get rid of this family.. Unless don't vote on Pheu Thai.. But they will always find a way to join  the Government

conversely it would appear that nobody connected to this family has the faintest Idea how to lead and run a country, yet they are still truly ridiculous

Business and politics are joined at the hip.

The corrupt Shinawatra clan have been brazenly demonstrating that for 20+ years.

The Shins have been milking that cow for more than 20 years, and it’s given them a lot of money and power. So why not do it some more? Absolute power corrupts absolutely, of which there are plenty examples in Thai politics and society. The Shinawatras are right at the top of that list.

After living in Thailand for the past 25 years I don't give a ratz about Thai politics, I'm more interested in the exchange rates. Let's no forget when Yinluck was PM the Aussie dollar was 33.5 baht. The military muscled in and it quickly got reduced by 30%. Irrespective of what country you come from what was your exchange prior to the the military take over? I know the UK pound was in the 80's.

He would sell Thailand to Hun Sen if he could.

Trump is angling for Don Jr to succeed him, pushing out Vance, followed by cockwomble Eric then Barron. Similar to the Shins there are multiple familial personalities to maintain his Dictatorship. Shame about what used to be the USA.

Throwing another family member under the bus! 3 ousted members of the family and they still haven't learnt that the powers that be will never let them remain in power for long at best they are just booted out of their position at worse they have to go on the run or face imprisonment
