Around 7,000 students, faculty, and staff at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) protested against corruption and called for increased education funding. The gathering took place at UPLB Oblation Park and across eight colleges in a program organized by UP Action Los Baños. Participants wore black and displayed banners, supported by UPLB Chancellor Jose V. Camacho, Jr. and college deans.

These protests were in response to infrastructure projects linked to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), now under scrutiny by Congress and the Senate. On September 5, UP Board of Regents sectoral regents called for an assessment of UP's memorandum with DPWH. They requested transparency on all ongoing and completed projects to address concerns.

Additionally, the protests highlighted the reduced budget for the UP System. Approved by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for 2026, the budget stands at P15.82 billion—45% lower than the P46.85 billion requested in March 2025. The DPWH, during a budget hearing on September 17, proposed a reduced 2026 budget of P625.78 billion, eliminating locally funded flood control projects.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed no budget for flood control projects next year, reallocating funds to education, health, and other sectors. This coincides with Marcos's statement on eradicating problematic budget items. Protests have taken place in other UP campuses, including UP Diliman and UP Baguio, with more planned in UP Manila, UP Mindanao, and Rizal Park on September 21.

This ongoing protest series aligns with the 53rd commemoration of martial law declared by Marcos Jr.’s father. Participants advocate against corruption and challenge budget decisions, reflecting widespread concern among students and faculty.

Key Takeaways

  • UPLB protests address corruption and demand higher education funding.
  • Reduced budgets for education and realigned DPWH spending drive protests.
  • Additional protests planned nationwide coinciding with martial law commemoration.
