Gaza-Bound Flotilla Expands to 40 Vessels After Sicilian Fleet Joins

The Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla has swelled to around 40 vessels after a fleet from Sicily joined its ranks. The armada, made up largely of sailing boats along with several larger ships, is now roughly 1,000 miles from the coast of Gaza as it continues east through the Mediterranean.

The flotilla began with about 20 vessels that departed Barcelona on September 1, stopping briefly near Minorca before arriving off Tunisia’s coast on September 7. Activists say drones threatened the ships near Tunis, though only unverified video footage shows flaming objects falling near one vessel, which appeared unharmed.

After several days near Tunis and Bizerte, the group crossed to Italy, where they merged on Thursday with another 20 vessels that had set out from ports near Syracuse and Portopalo. Since combining, the enlarged flotilla has been moving eastward, slowed at times by strong winds. By September 20, the fleet had covered about 55 nautical miles and resumed its course.

For some participants, this voyage marks nearly three weeks at sea. Organizers say the mission is aimed at challenging what they describe as Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Similar flotilla attempts in past years have drawn international attention and, at times, confrontation.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Global Sumud Flotilla now includes about 40 vessels after joining with Sicilian activists.

  • The fleet has sailed from Spain, through Tunisia and Italy, and is now heading east across the Mediterranean.

  • Organizers frame the mission as a protest against the “siege” of Gaza, echoing past flotilla efforts.

Excellent. Israel needs to be pressured as much as possible to stop the atrocities in gaza and the west bank.

It's about time the Navy's of all the participating groups tagged along to give them protection from any Israeli drone/naval attacks.

“Blockade”?
That’s a slight understatement; it’s full scale ethnic cleansing, and many governments(and the UN) say it’s genocide.
